Once in the office, the principal wasn't surprised to see Richard there. "Ugh. Again?" was the first thing he said.

They were instructed to take a seat on the chairs lined up against the wall and wait to be called in one at a time. Richard was called up first and given a whole lecture about how important it was for him to stop slacking off on his senior year. Besides that, he was let go and sent to class.

However, Uriel, Sofia, and Inez were not let off the hook as easily.

Uriel was up next and the girls could hear the principal calling his parents to inform them about what their son was up to.

Inez cursed under her breath, tapping her foot nervously. "They're calling our parents. Jessica's gonna kill me!"

She looked at Sofia, who appeared way too calm. Bored, even. Inez wondered how she was able to do that. She'd be terrified if she had a dad like hers.

Her anxiety spiked when she saw Uriel come out of the office with a ticket in his hand. She figured the police officer was writing them up while the principal made the phone calls.

Her heart raced as she was called in next. She tentatively took a seat across his desk. The officer was seated right beside her, pen in hand hovering over a fresh blank ticket slip, ready to jot her information onto it.

"Well, this is definitely a new face," the principal said to the officer as he carefully studied her. "So is her friend's out there."

"Hm, so what do you think?" The officer scrutinized her. "Should they get a ticket? Or will you deal with them?"

Inez gave the principal her most desperately pleading eyes. Her palms were sweating against her thighs, heart beating uncomfortably, jaw tensely clenched.

Finally, the principal released a deep exhale and said, "I'll deal with them."

Inez gave out a relieved sigh as her body was given a chance to relax.

The officer gave her a patronizing look as he stood up to leave. "Consider yourselves lucky. I never let anyone slide by."

"Thank you," Inez made sure to tell them both as her heart began to settle back to a steady pace.
