"The difference between
school and life?

In school, you're taught a lesson
& then given a test.

In life, you're given a test
that teaches you a lesson."

The kicking soccer balls, whistles shrieking, coaches shouting commands, and tired teenagers gasping for air was all that could be heard at a high school soccer field in California.

The boys were training for their season on one half of the field, while the girls trained on the other.

The school year had only begun a few weeks ago and all the players seemed focused and determined to make it their best season.

"Sorry!" Daphne cried out as she ran to the boys' end to retrieve her ball after it had flown right past her.

The guy closest to the trespassing ball picked it up just as she came up in front of him, all out of breath.

"Thanks," she said, taking it from his hands while her eyes acknowledged how appealing he looked in his uniform. The short sleeves wrapped around his slim but toned arms in a way that made her hands envious.

His skin was golden like the sun, a perfect contrast to the black curls on his head. They were messy with beads of sweat at the ends, but that was inevitable with the warm temperature and the dedication he seemed to have for his game.

"I hope you're not the goalie," he jested, pointing out her inability to block the ball from getting so out of her reach.

His full lips curled into a smile that tugged the corners of her own to mimic it. "If I was, I can assure you you'd never score," she humored him back.

His brows quirked at the unanticipated reply, wondering if they were still referring to soccer. The glint in his chocolate brown eyes let her know she'd successfully amused him.

Just as he opened his mouth to offer a comeback, a loud bang nearly exploded their ears. Everyone around them shrieked in horror, dropping themselves to the ground.

He and Daphne quickly did the same. With his protective arm across her back, Daphne flinched against the grass, heart pounding violently in her chest, when two more gunshots pierced her ears.
