"Everything happens for a reason.
Things go wrong so that you can
appreciate them when they're right,
you believe lies so that you eventually
learn to trust no one but yourself,
and sometimes, good things fall apart,
so better things can fall together."
-Marilyn Monroe

Sofia isolated herself from everyone at school the next day. It had been humiliating enough that they were all there to witness Richard get cuffed, she didn't need to feel even smaller by their sympathetic stares.

Her stomach was growling at lunch but she wasn't hungry. Even when Eduardo found her sitting in an empty hallway and brought a tray of food over to her, she rejected it.

"I heard..." he muttered quietly. "How are you feeling?"

She didn't respond. She just rolled her eyes and threw her head back against the wall.

Eduardo sighed. "I know... stupid question."

As she tried to tell him to leave her alone, she noticed a painful lump had been sitting in her throat that she hadn't been aware of.

"Sofie, he was bound to end up like that. It was only a matter of time. I think deep down you also knew it all along." He watched a tear roll down her cheek. "I know you're hurt about it right now, but I'm glad this happened sooner than later. Before you got more attached to him."

"I feel like I was actually starting to fall for him..." she managed to choke out weakly. "The way he would say he loved me... I believed him... and he was always so sweet to me... said all the right things... I really thought it was happening... that I could fall in love with him despite all his flaws. It was starting to feel so real." She tried to swallow that knot down but it was stubbornly stuck there. "But then he goes and rapes a girl, as if I wasn't enough. As if he needed more than what I was giving him. I don't know. I don't get it. How am I always the idiot of the story?"

Eduardo didn't know what to say. He had never been the best at comforting people. The only time he felt he had been a decent enough consoler was when he broke up with her at Inez's party. And even then, she still left that place broken-hearted and angry at him.
