"Addiction is a family disease.
One person may use,
but everyone suffers."David rummaged through his mom's room that evening while she was work and he was just about to give up when his eyes landed on her neatly made mattress. He grabbed an edge and lifted it off the bed frame, holding it up with his head so his hands were free to push around a few folders and important documents she liked to store under there. And then finally, he found it. The manila envelope with Guillermo's name written up top in black marker.
He stepped back and let the mattress fall back into place and perched on it as he did nothing but stare at the large envelope for a good five minutes. With a heavy sigh, he made up his mind and decided he would open it, but first, he needed to get Eva on the phone.
"Yea?"
"Guess what?"
"You got laid," she said with an air of disappointment. "Barely lasted a day."
"No." He laughed briefly at her lack of faith. "I'm about to see his pictures."
"Oh." Eva sat up on her sofa, shutting her TV off to focus her undivided attention to this phone call. She didn't need any further explanation to know exactly whose pictures he was referring to. "You nervous?"
"Kinda... I mean it's a big deal. Not because I'm finally gonna see what he looks like, but because I feel like I'll be wasting all those years I tried avoiding it, ya know?"
"I know." Eva nodded understandably. "But you're gonna meet him on Saturday, so you might as well know what face to look for, right?"
"Yea," he muttered apprehensively. "That's what I was thinking."
"Ready? 1, 2, 3, GO!"
David chuckled at her attempt to hype him up. "Here goes nothing," was the last thing he said before turning the envelope around to bend the clasp on the back and open it.
He pulled out the pile of pictures that resided there and gawked at the very first one on top. It portrayed a very young Guillermo, possibly in his early 20s, and though David expected the strong resemblance, he was still stunned by it.
