"Hey, Josuke!"

Josuke's eyes widened as he turned around, only to sigh in relief at the sight of a familiar friend: Okuyasu. He watched as the other ran towards him, grinning from ear to ear, and he couldn't help but smile back. Though too embarrassed to admit it, Josuke stared at the school's sights below out of fear that Okuyasu would be amongst the students leaving.

"I didn't think you'd actually come here," Josuke said as he looked towards the sky. At almost 5:30 in the afternoon, the sky had already shifted its colors: marmalade mixing with rich honey, covering the entire school in its warmth. As the sun slowly lowered to make way for the night, its light made even the dreary school roof a sight to behold. "It's already pretty late."

"Are you kidding? You know how my club makes us stay until pretty late; I kind of regret taking kendo now." Okuyasu frowned as he scratched the back of his neck, standing a foot or two before Josuke. While Josuke remained in uniform, Okuyasu opted to take off one of its layers; his jacket slung over his shoulder, his tank-top on display.

Josuke hummed. "Hey, better than test-prep, right?" he asked, chuckling as the reference to cram schools made Okuyasu wince. "I mean, not like English club's any better. Don't know how my mom convinced me to join this kind of stuff."

"I mean, we've both made some nice friends, so I guess club stuff isn't too useless." Okuyasu made his way towards the roof's fence, glancing down and watching as his fellow club mates walked through the gate. He smiled to himself. "I-hey, didn't you call me here for something? You told me it was kind of important."

There it was.

Josuke nodded, standing next to Okuyasu as he now stared at nothing in particular. The rest of the school was probably empty now, only having the two of them and whatever faculty ended up left behind. "Yeah." Only then did a sense of anxiety make its way into Josuke, and he felt a flutter in his stomach that he wanted to force away. The confession he was about to make was one he had been putting off for months, and it was strange for him to think that today was the day.

"Must be something pretty serious if we have to talk about it here without Koichi or Yukako or whatever." Okuyasu nudged Josuke with his elbow, grinning all the while. As Josuke looked over, he felt his heart skip a beat, a warmth crawling into his head, but he tried to conceal it with a small laugh to distract the other.

"Serious? Mm, I'd say it is. Well, serious to me, anyway." Admittedly, Josuke didn't prepare a thing he would do or say on the roof, so he thought of stalling time by responding to Okuyasu but not being too specific. He was hopeful Okuyasu wouldn't notice what he tried to do, but the other was also quick to pick up on things recently. "I don't know how you'll feel about it."

"Don't know how I'll feel about it," Okuyasu repeated under his breath, nodding while he looked up into the sky. "Why would you say that?"

With a hum, Josuke had to pause and think. He clicked his tongue, racking his mind for a response that at least sounded appropriate. "You might not like it, I guess."

Okuyasu chuckled. "It's not like I know what it is, Josuke. You're going to have to be more specific." He nudged Josuke again, but this time it seemed to have more of a sense of urgency. For a moment, Josuke's body tensed, but he wished it didn't look too obvious. "Come on. It's getting late! For all we know, they'll lock us up here."

Shit. Okuyasu was right; taking his time here wouldn't be the best option. The warmth Josuke felt finally spread out onto his cheeks, tinting them a faint pink. "I mean-alright, but can you promise me you won't freak out over this or anything? Like, if you don't like it, just please don't tell anyone else?"

"Come on, as if I've ever told anyone your secrets!" Okuyasu paused. "I'm talking like I've even remembered all of them," he suddenly admitted, chuckling and scratching the back of his head. "But yeah, you can trust me! I doubt what you say will be bad."

"Alright."

Josuke stood there, still staring down at the empty expanse of the school.

Okuyasu stood by Josuke, staring at the other with a patient smile and a curious gaze.

The seconds passed, but not a word ended up uttered.

"Josuke, you're awfully quiet-"

"Well, it's because I like you, Oku!" The words came out in a flustered flurry, and, as soon as Josuke realized what he'd said, he looked away. His face now felt feverish, and he bit down on his bottom lip as he waited for a response.

Silence.

"Wait, hold on," Okuyasu said, suddenly making Josuke turn back to face him. "You like me?"

With a slow nod, Josuke tried not to seem awkward.

"As in like like me?"

"I-yes, I like like you."

"Well, you should have just said that sooner!" Okuyasu said, grinning from ear to ear as he stepped closer towards Josuke. "I like you too, silly!"

Though it took a while before the statement settled in, Josuke gasped as soon as it had. His anxieties lifted, his body light, and he looked to Okuyasu with the broadest grin he could muster. "Really?" Josuke asked, unable to mask his excitement.

"Really!" Okuyasu confirmed with a grin, nodding as he did so. "I would have told you ages ago if you tried to make a move, you know."

Josuke couldn't believe what he just heard, yet he cherished it all the same. Though even with the sense of certainty he now had, he couldn't help but ask again: "Wait, really? 'Cause I-"

Before Josuke could finish the thought, his glance went from the boy before him to the rest of the school below. What he saw made him tense, eyes widening as well; the school's maintenance man had, unbeknownst to him in their moments of bliss, locked the front gate.

"Well that's a doozy," Okuyasu said with a frown.

At least the confession was worth it, Josuke thought in an attempt to console himself.
