Eddy awoke first, his lashes fluttering slightly as he opened his eyes. He poked his head out of his burrito like nest to peer upon Brett who had laid by him for the night. He was thankful for that.
Brett was still fast asleep, curled up next to Eddy. He had slept better than he had in years with Eddy being right there next to him. The times he had woken up after his usual nightmare where Eddy would leave him just like he had eight years ago, he had been able to feel sure that Eddy was still there immediately. Everything smelled like Eddy, which felt safe.
Eddy simply watched him despite that being a bit creepy. It was payback for all the nights that people had watched him sleep, or so Eddy told himself. Brett looked so peaceful and young when like this, Eddy thought. It reminded him of when they were actually friends and not acquaintances. Sometimes he missed those days, maybe more than sometimes. It wasn't good to stay trapped in the past though.
The room was getting too light for Brett to continue his slumber, and he blinked a few times before slowly opening his eyes. At first he didn't understand where he was, because he practically never slept in this room. When he did realize, though, he looked around to see if he could understand why he was in this room. He had taken off his glasses the night before, but he still recognized Eddy in front of him. Maybe he was still dreaming?
"Morning sleepy head," Eddy's voice was a bit raspy from just waking up and it mixed with his generally low tone. He smiled a bit, guessing he should give Brett time before hopping into serious conversation with him.
"Morning," Brett mumbled, rubbing his eyes. Turned out he wasn't dreaming, though waking up next to him felt like he might as well be. How was Eddy's voice so nice, anyway? And why did he have to notice that first thing in the morning? He pushed himself up into a sitting position, trying to figure out where exactly he had put his glasses. They were eventually found on the nightstand next to him. He rubbed his eyes before putting them on.
Eddy quietly watched, he would wait in silence. It helped him get his own thoughts together. He was thinking about what Ray had suggested. Eddy wanted to take action on it perhaps.
"Did... did you sleep well?" Brett asked, looking over at Eddy on the other side of the bed. He didn't dare to meet his eyes, though, knowing he'd get the butterflies back.
"I slept better than usual but not great, things keep me up at night," Eddy was much calmer with someone by his side but it didn't keep the phantoms of his wrong doings or past from haunting him. He should have taken his medicine honestly. Alas, he didn't trust it.
"Oh, I'm sorry to hear that," Brett said, scratching his chin slightly. He wasn't sure if it was appropriate to tell him he had slept better than he had the last eight years. Maybe except the time he asked Ray for some sleeping pills and slept for almost twenty hours.
"You don't need to apologize, it's nothing you can do about or caused, "Eddy flashed him a lopsided grin. All the horrors of the night were natural for him, he wouldn't sit and complain about it. Complaining didn't fix anything anyways. He would simply deal with it until he actually checked the contents of his distributed medicine.
"No, I know, I guess I just wish I could help you with it," Brett said with a small shrug. He wasn't sure if he was supposed to leave now or if Eddy wanted him here still, so he ended up just sitting there. A small part of him was really hopeful Eddy wanted him nearby. It was the same small part that constantly hoped Eddy would want him. Brett had already figured that would never happen.
"I guess I technically have medicine for it but it was distributed by the organization so I don't really trust it. You know? They like screwing me over a lot," Eddy sighed as they talked.
"Oh, we can ask Ray to check them out for you? Or get you new ones with similar effects?" Brett suggested softly, running a hand through his hair. "If you want, that is."
"I wouldn't mind having him check, just to see if they're damaging to me. I have quite a few though," Eddy had many prescription bottles he didn't touch. He sat up and cracked his back. It sounded a bit like opening a bag of chips.
"I can message him," Brett said with a small smile, grabbing his phone from the nightstand next to where his glasses had been. He liked feeling like he was helping Eddy.
"Thank you, Bretty," Eddy smiled at him, it was kinda strange to be here admittedly. It wasn't bad but he kept thinking about Alex. Not even romantically but trying to figure out how he could free his friend. Above all Alex was his friend.
"Of course, don't worry about it," Brett mumbled while typing. "I wanna help you with what I can."
"I need help with something else then Brett," Eddy slowly opened up the conversation. He wanted to save Alex, he didn't care if they were together or not.
"Anything," Brett responded with, looking up at Eddy after he had messaged Ray. He had nothing more to lose at this point anyway.
Eddy looked at him taking a deep breath, "Okay so hear me out. It deals with Alex. It's not about our romantic relationship but our friendship. Like I don't care if we date after this."
Eddy has a serious look in his eyes, there was no lie about what he said, "I want to smuggle Alex out of the organization. Ray said he could possibly get the tracking chip out of his wrist."
Eddy saw this as a chance to get him a good life.
"Okay," Brett nodded, swallowing the lump that formed in his throat. Of course Eddy was going to go back to Alex, and more importantly: Of course Brett would help him get there. "What do you need from me?"
"I'm not sure yet." Eddy didn't think that having them kidnap Alex would be smart. Like not at all, "It will need some planning and convincing. He was raised by them so he will be reluctant to leave."
Eddy tapped his leg anxiously.
"I suppose finding a way to talk to him will be the first step, then," Brett said, licking his lips. His instinct was to fight this happening. He had Eddy right there! Surely this would only make everything more difficult for himself! It was impossible for him to deny Eddy, though. "And then we could figure it out from there."
"I can write him back, it seems less suspicious to get mail," Eddy continued tapping, he was really trying to think, "I guess we should also get him somewhere out of the organizations reach. I know they no longer have a post in Japan and he's from there so maybe there. I happen to be a wanted criminal there."
He murmured as he thought.
"That sounds like you won't be able to go there," Brett said softly, looking up at Eddy. "Don't you want to go with him?"
"Brett, above all things Alex is my friend. My best friend. I don't care if I am with him or not, I care if he's free. If you love someone you're okay with letting them go if it means it's for their best. I know the organization isn't the best for him." Eddy was dead serious, "I might be wanted but there's a chance of him walking as a free man."
"I understand that, but surely there has to be a way for you to go together? You wouldn't want to stay here with me, would you?" Brett asked, already having decided for himself that Eddy would want to get out again. There was a reason he had left him in the first place, and Brett didn't feel like he had improved since then either.
"I don't know if there is a way for both of us, when it comes to us being wanted in different countries, us fitting in, being in a gay relationship being illegal in different countries and being out of reach of the organization. There's a lot and I just don't know. I just want him to be okay, I don't think he's okay right now.... He has no one," Eddy felt like he was in emotional distress because of that.
"So, we'll get him out first, and then we'll figure that out for you guys," Brett said with a small shrug. It hurt that Eddy didn't say he wanted to stay with him, or at least that he didn't mind. It shouldn't, though. He knew he wasn't as important to Eddy as Eddy was to him, so he shouldn't let it hurt him. "We'll figure out a way."
"Thank you Brett, don't worry too much about me though in this. I won't either. I know how to survive. I've been through a lot and I can survive and thrive on good terms," Eddy actually hugged Brett, "I trust you with this."
He sighed contently, feeling like Brett was definitely someone who could handle this. At the moment he had no reason to distrust Brett.
