Being freshly employed as one of your city's crime bosses' men hadn't really been what Ray had imagined for his life, but he had to admit he could see it coming when he finally dropped out of the medical studies his parents had insisted on.
He learned pretty quickly that med school wasn't for him, though. After ending up in hospital himself after fainting during their first time seeing some actual blood, he realized this wasn't the place for him. Of course, his father had insisted it was nothing and made him continue, proud to have a soon-to-be doctor as his son.
A few months into his studies, Ray discovered how badly monitored the cabinet of prescription drugs were. He noticed that a few of the nurses were snagging some heavy pain meds and that the pharmacist in charge definitely was hooked on a variety of the stuff they kept in there.
So, being the smart boy he was, having top grades in all his subjects, Ray figured he could earn some cash from this.
It started small with a box of some stuff he probably should have bothered to learn the name of in one of his classes that he sold to the bum outside the hospital at a reasonable price. Then a few more gathered to buy from him, and before he knew it he had a small group of regulars.
It was going great, really, except the fact that at the end of the school year he knew he'd be kicked out for underperforming. He'd been really worried about that until the man in a suit who bought from him every one in a while approached him asking him to join a group he was part of.
That man was Victor, and that group was the group of guys working for the boss. Of course he accepted that offer, hearing how well the boss paid for good work.
Part of the job was really getting to know the guys he was working with, so when Victor told him they were going out for drinks after work he knew he had to come. He was cheered for as he bought the first round for the guys with his father's credit card. A guy who was introduced as Inu, who seemed to be around the same rank as Victor, patted him on the back as if to say "welcome to the gang."
Ray knew he was "in" after that.
"So, Ray, what did you do to catch Victor's eye, eh?" a definitely no longer sober Inu asked a few hours later, squinting to try and focus on the still pretty much sober rookie."I hear you were selling meds?"
Ray nodded affirmatively, but Victor spoke before he could answer him properly.
"Yeah, boy's smart. Gathered a group of regulars in just a few months, man," Victor answered for him in slurred words, patting the rookie on the back. "But to think the boss liked you enough to put you on such an important task right away? I'm impressed, honestly. Good on you for not fucking it up."
"It wasn't a particularly hard task, though. The guy was unconscious, after all," Ray shrugged, trying to seem as tough as some of the other guys who were drunkenly chatting around their table. "But why he's keeping him in the mansion is beyond me, I mean..."
"Aaaand I suggest you stop there, kid," Inu warned him, giving him a friendly stern look. "We do not question the boss around here."
"But, I mean, the safety..."
"The boss knows what he's doing," Victor stopped him. "He's probably interrogating him as we speak. Glad I'm not the poor prisoner, the boss' gonna eat him alive."
