The apartment smelled amazingly of still baking cookies. It wasn't really that Victor was that into baking, cooking or any of the things he found himself doing around the apartment recently. It was more that he was a good host that liked seeing his guest happy. His guest did not seem happy now, which was very understandable given the recent news of the boss' failed attempt at rescuing Eddy. Victor hadn't really known what to do to make Alex feel any better, but he knew what had always cheered him up when he was a kid.
Grandma always made the best cookies. The few times a year they had gotten their hands on some pumpkin and cinnamon was the best. Her pumpkin cookies tasted heavenly, and Victor was lucky to have some pumpkin in his freezer from the last time he had made a batch to cheer himself up. He was certain this would at least help somewhat on Alex' stressed and frustrated mood.
The alarm on his phone sounded, and he switched it off quickly and opened the oven to check on the cookies. They looked good, all done, so he grabbed oven mitts and got the baking tray out.
"Looks like the cookies are all done," he informed Alex, who had been in the living room the last time he checked. "Do you want some coffee with them once they cool down a bit?"
"Sure, " With coffee Alex could at least pretend he was waterboarding his enemy for taking his boyfriend. He didn't even have to imagine what they would do to Eddy, he had lived long enough with them to know what they would do. To know what they have done. How could he just sit around here and do nothing!? He needed to be out there and to save Eddy. He hadn't come last time, but he wanted to be here this time to save Eddy. He made a promise, he certainly could fulfill this. The radio silence from Brett after the failure was also freaking him out! It was making it harder to sit still.
Victor went to start the coffee machine and grab mugs for both of them.
"Want cookies here or in there?" he asked, wanting Alex to be comfortable despite the awful situation that was going on. He really hoped Eddy was okay. Just the thought of Alex being that upset really upset him too, which he probably should have found weird, but didn't because that seemed to be the new norm now. Caring about what Alex felt."Here, " Alex kept it to simple one word answers, because he was shutting down. He was having a hard time not doing anything. How could he not be upset!? He knew he had a way to seem distant from the situation but it didn't mean that every scenario wasn't playing through his head.
"Alright, I'll be right there," Victor said, kind of feeling like he should be doing something more to cheer the poor guy up. He didn't know what that could possibly be, though, so instead he filled up the coffee mugs, stacked up some of the cookies on a plate and brought it all out to the living room, bringing the wonderful scent with him.
Alex was pacing again, pulling at his hair occasionally just to try to keep himself grounded but when he saw Victor come in, he shuffled a bit to the couch so he could sit with Victor and drown some cookies to let out his frustrations, "Has Brett said anything else?"
He had probably asked that a lot but he didn't care, Eddy was on the line.
"I'm afraid not yet," Victor said in a calm voice, putting the plate and mugs down before sitting down across from Alex. "Let's have some cookies and coffee and then I'll text him, alright? Just take a breather first. Stressing isn't helping him, and worrying isn't helping him. It only hurts you.."
"No it's not but I could be out there helping him," Alex rubbed his face. This never got easier to deal with. Eddy going through the training time and time again was never easy, Eddy being dragged into the organization was never easy, letting the man go on his solo missions or even thinking he lost Eddy to Brett. None of it was ever easy because he never knew if Eddy would come out of it alive again.
"There's nothing you can do without putting yourself in harm's way," Victor said, picking up the plate of cookies and holding it out for him to take one. "I know I don't want you to do that, and Eddy wouldn't want you to do that either, would he?"
"Probably not but how can I just sit around and do nothing," Alex groaned, he knew Eddy was strong but he wanted to protect him. Eddy didn't need anything else to go wrong. The human brain could only take so much!
"Take a cookie, okay? It's gonna be okay. Boss will figure this out," Victor said, having the utmost faith in his boss' ability to fix things. It rarely ever happened that there was anything he couldn't fix, and Eddy seemed to be very important to him. He would definitely figure it out.
Alex didn't know Brett so he didn't fully trust his abilities. He took a cookie nonetheless though, "It's hard to trust another man with your boyfriend, you know?"
Even if said man had fucked his boyfriend. Alex knew, they didn't hide things from one another. Plus he lowkey gave the permission since seduction was a common practice when trying to kill someone surprisingly."I wouldn't know, as I've never had one, but I can imagine," Victor nodded, grabbing himself a cookie too and putting the plate down. He bit into it, humming softly as he felt it melt on his tongue into a perfect sweet mix. These went well with coffee. "I really think boss cares a lot for Eddy, though. He goes to the end of the world for people he cares about."
"I'm glad he cares for him otherwise things wouldn't be how they are. However, let me try to put it in perspective of how it feels. You have a younger sister, right?" Alex had noticed an old photo somewhere in the house, and he was rather observant so it caught his attention. It was either Victor's own siblings or a parent and their siblings in the photo.
"Yeah, two," Victor nodded, open to learn how it felt. He did not think he would get it, though, as he had never understood the deal with romantic love. It was easy to figure it would be like getting your best friend captured, though. Maybe a bit more intense.
"You have a platonic love there I assume, which is different than a romantic love but can provoke similar reactions. So imagine some military men in Russia take your little sister because you avoided military time. They know her sexual activity, they know her medications, they know all her traumas, along with all injuries. In their captivity they use all of those things against her as a form of torture. Yet you have to sit there, know exactly what they're doing but you can't do anything until someone steps in or they eventually kill her because they don't find her of use anymore." Alex kept it pg since the graphic details probably weren't needed. The mind could imagine it and fill in the blanks.
Victor furrowed his brows as Alex explained, definitely not liking the image this painted in his head. He loved his sister, and he would for sure be angry!
"I would be very angry and frustrated," he nodded, taking another bite of his cookie while thinking about how to say the next thing in English. "I still think... I mean, I would be less worried knowing boss was the one to fix it for me. I trust boss, and knowing he would be the one to get my sister out of that would be comforting.""Sadly trust doesn't fix psychological damage," Alex chomped on a cookie, at least Victor understood how angry and frustrated he felt now, "But if you choose to trust him then I'll trust him too."
Alex would try at least. He hoped to hear something from Brett soon though.
