John says "hello" many different ways in a range of circumstances, and one of them is under his breath when he checks you out. He literally double takes to look at you.

He quickly pulls his eyes away and pretends to be in thought or something. He doesn't want to make you feel uncomfortable, or like he only notices your looks. In that way, he can be quite sincere and sweet.

He stops whatever he is doing, exhales deeply then continues. You literally stun him with your looks, and to be honest, his reaction is quite flattering.
