#99 A Shattered Mind P2

Okay, this name might seem very dramatic, and truth is... the original plot was supposed to go VERY differently. Which might make you ask why I changed it so much. The answer is quite sensible and reasonable... I forgot a LOT of the details I had planned. Oops ;P

My shoulders tensed in worry as I sensed the feeling in my friends. Why were they looking at me like that when I only asked a simple question? Oh no... did I upset them by bringing him up so soon after our reunion? I hope I didn't seem rude! Or was it that they had a fight with Meliodas and didn't want to talk about him? That had happened a few times with Ban and Meliodas when Ban would get too snippy or Diane too jealousy when he'd be talking to another girl- even if completely innocent.

"Um... Ellie he's uh... W-Well..."

My heart thumped even harder in anxiety as her eyes darted to Ban briefly while she trailed off. She never acted like this... what was going on!?

Seconds away from asking just that, I was relieved to see Ban sigh and open his mouth to finish for the brunette who hadn't.

"Ellie, we-"

Brrring!

It was the worst sound in the world on a normal day. So hearing it now interrupt my friends made me feel like I was stabbed with disappointment and impatience as they used the opportunity.

"Oop! Well, looks like we better head off, our first class is Hendrickson and you know how he hates when people are late. Hehe... whelp, anywaywegottagobyeElliiiiee!"

Diane shouted my name halfway across the hall as she had already shoved Ban down it to avoid my rebuttal.

Why are they being so weird? And how am I going to wait until lunch to find out!? I'll never be able to focus in classes now...

Feeling more melancholy than ever, I sighed deeply before trudging to class with acceptance already that I'd be receiving a tardy from Mr Dreyfus on my very first day back.

I was ten minutes late to class even after changing my speed to get there faster, but there was one upside that overshadowed both that and the embarrassing introduction I had to give to the whole class...

King was here! Sitting next to a blond girl about his height that he seemed very close to.

Who's that? He's with Diane, right? I can't imagine him talking to someone else on top of that, he's been head over heels for Diane for years! And he's being way too calm around this girl, around any other girl he gets super scattered and silly!

After taking my seat only a little ways away from the two, I felt the sadness return as I realized he hadn't even looked at me since I had entered. It felt so selfish to feel sad about the possibility that he had moved on from our friendship, but... I still did.

Trying not to think about it- and give him the benefit of the doubt that perhaps he hadn't noticed my entrance- I looked down at my books to begin notes.

I'm being so silly about all of this.. I want my friends to be happy! And if he's moved on and found the courage to have another female friend other than Diane and I, then I should be happy! Don't be stupid and petty Ellie..

I wanted to continue sinking into my thoughts, but I was snapped out of them quickly by a quick "ppsst" that got my attention.

Looking discreetly at where the sound came from, I felt my heart leap as it was Harlequin! His eyes as well as the girl next to him's both on me.

"Hey Ellie, it's uh... it's nice to have you back. I heard you were transferring here last week but I wasn't sure if I had heard the name right. Turns out I did. Really good to see you again."

He spoke in a loud whisper with an awkward smile on his face. Although I was no longer worried when seeing it. Why? Because this was actually very normal King behavior, he was very sweet, very smart, and very awkward with social situations.

The blond girl whispered to Harlequin for a second before his smile became slightly bigger and he turned back to me.

"Oh yeah, and this is Elaine. She's been wanting to meet you for awhile. You never met her, but remember my little sister I always had to babysit? Yeah, this is her."

Everything clicked into place at the explanation.

Oh yeah! That's right! He always called his younger sister Little Pixie since she was always so tiny, her real name must actually be Elaine! Wait.. does that mean...

In a whisper slightly louder than intended due to my shock, I said the first thing that came to mind after recalling Diane's talk with Ban.

"Wait! Your sister is dating Ban!?"

I got a few glares from surrounding students that made me blush in embarrassment, but King just gave a sheepish chuckle while his sister covered her own blush with her hands.

"I guess you've already seen Ban then, huh? Yeah, they're together. I was against it at first seeing as she's my baby sister and all, but I'm okay with it now. She's only two years younger than him and is probably much more mature in the end."

Only two years younger? Then why did he have to watch her so often?

Sensing the inquisitive look on my face, Elaine herself answered what I was thinking.

"Our parents are quite protective of us. Even homeschooled me for a long time to shelter me from other kids. They only agreed to let me come to public school with my brother if I could be in the same grade as him, so I worked super hard for awhile and here I am! It's really nice to finally meet you Elizabeth! King never let me see any of his friends."

She shot her brother a playful glare while I smiled at the interaction, feeling a weight lifted from my heart as seeing them in good graces. I refrained from saying anything beyond that, not wanting to further make myself look like a bad student in the teacher's eyes. However, I knew that once I managed to get him, Diane, and Ban all together at one table during lunch, I'd ask every single thing that I had wondered about them over the time we'd been apart.

Including the newest, biggest, most worrisome question on my mind..

What had happened with Meliodas? What could've been the end to what Ban had started before being interrupted by the bell?

Shorter than the last but hopefully okay! I'm gonna try to prevent a hiatus like last time. ;P
