Elizabeth found it often that she would hear the door to the room open at night, but had always been in the half asleep state where she didn't pay much mind to it. After all, Meliodas didn't stirr at all to it, so it couldn't be dangerous.
However tonight was different, tonight she was just awake enough to notice and decide to take a look. And she was glad she did.
She looked up just in time to see a mop of blond hair disappear out the door as he shut it quietly behind him, and looked over to the other side of the bed just to make sure she was correct in her theory on who it was. She was.
What is he doing up so late, or should I say early.. How often has he been sneaking out like this? Is something wrong?
Elizabeth decided to get some answers to these questions as she put on her slippers and walked quietly across the cold, wooden, floor. She was on the last step when she heard another door open, only this time it was the front one.
Feeling alarmed by his sudden departure, she picked up the speed and followed quickly. Although it wasn't necessary as she noticed he had taken a seat on a nearby hill, a cup of ale in hand.
Summoning her wings to follow, she took a quiet landing behind him and placed her hand on his shoulder, something he didn't react to as he could sense it was Elizabeth and not someone else due to their bond.
"Meliodas? Is everything alright? What are you doing up at this time?"
Her voice was still a bit groggy from sleep, but also held the gentle quality in it that most knew of her.
"It's nothing love. Just go back to sleep, I didn't mean to wake you."
Well something was definitely wrong. Although he tried to hide it by keeping his back turned away from her, his voice was slightly shaky as was the rest of him.
"Meli.."
She said his name kindly, but also sternly, a combination only she could accomplish. Sitting on her knees with her legs behind her, she began to mess with his hair comfortingly.
"I know something's worrying you. You're shaking. What happened to no more secrets, hmm?"
He tensed at that. After they had broken the curse chaining them both to such a tragic fate, they promised no more secrets between them. After all, it was a secret that caused the curse, and a secret that Meliodas had to keep from her for thousands of years to keep her from dying. They didn't want to keep anything from each other after that.
"Ellie, please.. Just go back to bed. You need rest."
Elizabeth frowned at that. He was closing off from her, and she didn't know why. It hurt her deeply knowing that whatever he was going through, he felt he had to hide it from her, but she pushed the feeling aside to try and figure out just what would get him to act in such a way.
Before it hit her.
"Did you have a nightmare?"
The question was asked softly, mainly because she knew the many possibilities thst it could have been about. His brothers, his time under the control of his father, the hundreds if not thousands of people he had killed in his thousands of years, any number of his deaths, any number of the previous Elizabeth's that had been killed. And the list went on and on.
Her heart dropped when he nodded shakily. Gently pulling him back so he could rest his head on her chest, she began to run her hands through his hair again before asking the next big question.
"Can you tell me what it was about?"
He closed his eyes before taking a deep breath.
"It started nice, us flying through the air and racing like we used to. The sky was bright, and the place was beautiful. Like a combination of all of the wonderful places we've traveled. It was only when we landed that the scene changed into something... horrifying. The sky darkened, and we were back. We were back in the fight against our parents. There was so much blood, so many deaths, and so many wounds that I knew neither of us would win. But a second later when I thought it would be the end, a bright light came over me and when my vision cleared my hand was through your stomach. Killing both you and... our child. I tried to pull away, I tried to stop it, I tried to pull away and get you help, but instead my hand went deeper, and I looked into your eyes as they looked back in horror and pain. Before they dulled and lost the light they used to have. I wanted to cry, I wanted to fall by your side and hold you one last time, but instead I got up and flew off, every few seconds another body gathering in my collection of murders. Gloxina, Drole, Ban, King, little Merlin, Hawke, Diane, Escanor, Gowther, both demon and doll, and countless others. I kept screaming at myself to stop, to stop the killing to stop the pain, but my body didn't listen, I was under the demon king's complete control. And soon I began to lose myself... before I woke up a few minutes later."
Elizabeth tried to hold back tears, she knew more than most the pain Meliodas had experienced through those years, but even the things she had gone through paled in comparison to what he had both been forced to do for their freedom and the things he had to feel and experience to protect her from the curse.
"Have you had this dream before?"
He nodded, a dull look in his eyes that she now noticed had deep bags under them.
"Meli... I want you to listen to me. You aren't other your father's control anymore. The sins are safe... I'm safe.. and our baby is safe."
She put his hand on her slightly swollen stomach and watched as tears welled up in his eyes that had clearly been building up for a long time.
"B-But what if childbirth goes badly? A hybrid child of a demon and goddess hasn't been done before Ellie... What if I lose both you and our baby? I... I'm scared. If you died before, the thing that kept me going is that I knew you would come back to me. But if you die now... that's it. Three thousand years of fighting, tears, and torture will all be for nothing because I will have lost you for good. I-I won't survive that Ellie... losing both you and our baby. Or even just one or the other.... I-I won't make it."
"Shhhh.. It's not going to happen Mel."
Her voice was gentle but confident. Showing she truly believed in those words.
"How do you know that? Merlin said there was a risk, what if she was right? What if the baby survives but I lose you? Or what if you survive and we lose the baby? Or what if the baby's too powerful and becomes dangerous? I want to have this baby with you Elizabeth I truly do, but there are so many what ifs and I can't take it!"
"Meli!"
She shook him from his daze before he could panic fully.
"That isn't going to happen... Our baby will be fine, and so will I. We've taken several precautions for any situation, and our little boy or girl won't end up evil. Do you know why?"
"Why."
"Because they'll have us to make sure they turn out as good as their father. And even if they have more power than we thought, so did you and you turned out just fine... We'll get through this and we'll do it together. Okay?"
He nodded, snuggling closer to her as his eyes drooped from exhaustion.
"Y-Yeah.. We'll be okay. I just wish I could know for sure, ya know?"
"Me too, but in another seven months we will. And until then we can hope and trust that we'll be okay. Because we have to choose to believe that we will be."
She held him close as they stayed in each other's company. The days of no sleep were catching up with Meliodas as he started to drift off, but this time he wasn't afraid to.
"I love you Ellie.. I love you unnamed child.."
She giggled in reply, feeling a bit giddy from knowing that they would be parents soon.
"We love you too Mel, and the baby can't wait to meet you."
He smiled before finally drifting off, the first peaceful sleep he had in months.
Hope this was okay! I might make it a two or three parter if you guys like it.
