"OKAY I LOOKED up a previous dance from a different year," I told Jeremy, the two of us standing in his living room. I set my phone, which was playing the recording, propped up against a stack of books. It was the morning before the dance, and we had exactly an hour to figure out this dance before I needed to leave to get ready.

"I still don't get this," Jeremy said as he peered down at my phone.

"I don't either," I sighed. "What's the whole point of not touching anyway?"

"Who knows," Jeremy shrugged, gently tugging my hand so I was facing him. As the music started playing in the video, we began. We had the hand part down, it was just the waltz we struggled with.

"Oh, I'm sorry!" I exclaimed as I stepped on his shoe again.

"It's okay," he sent me a smile. "I think I was supposed to step back."

"God, this is so confusing," I shook my head, moving to rewind the video back to where the waltz began. "Okay, so we go forward, back, side, turn, side, back?"

"Are you telling me or asking?" Jeremy questioned, his charming smile settling on his face.

"I don't know," I admitted with a shrug. "Maybe we should have paid more attention during rehearsal."

"I was paying attention, I just had no idea what to do. I told you, I don't dance," Jeremy alerted me, plopping down on his couch. I rolled my eyes at his antics.

"We're never going to get this," I said, sitting beside Jeremy.

"We've only been working at this for five minutes," Jeremy told me and I rolled my head to look at him.

"Yeah, well, I don't do pageants."

"And I don't do dancing," Jeremy reminded me.

"So you say."

Elena's aunt, Jenna, had come to help Elena get ready for the pageant. I heard their light chatter as Jenna attempted to curl Elena's hair. I, however, had many years to practice and my aunt was a good role model when it came to stuff like that.

I had the majority of my hair pinned back, two strands pulled out to frame my face. I had a beautiful diamond necklace my father had given me, with a matching bracelet from Nik, as well as earrings from Kol. When I glanced over at Caroline, I could tell she was gazing longingly at Elena and her aunt.

Seeing as I already had my hair and makeup done, I walked over to her. "Your hair looks beautiful, Caroline," I said, offering to cheer her up. "When you're done, would you mind helping me change into my dress? I can never zip it myself."

Caroline threw on a smile for me. "Of course," she nodded. "Actually, I'm pretty much done now. Just need to fix my makeup, but I want to put my dress on first."
