Annabelle
BY THE TIME morning came, Caroline was completely better and her spirit was higher. She returned the next day with Tyler, both having things in their hands.
"Well, if it isn't little orphan Lockwood," Nik commented, peering up at them from his seat perched on the coffee table. "Come to show how laughably impotent you are against me?"
"I'm just trying to help my friends find the cure," Tyler shot back, reminding me of Jeremy.
"Here, Belle, I brought you coffee," Caroline said quietly, offering it to me. I pushed myself off the couch, shooting her a grateful smile as she reached into the barrier, allowing me to take it. Then, she sat down on the chair outside the barrier while I plopped down on the couch inside the barrier.
"Found this in your attic," Tyler said, revealing a sword.
"And you think finding the sword brings you closer to the cure?" Nik asked, arching an eyebrow at him.
"You tell me," Tyler said as he observed the piece of metal. "I was playing around with the handle on the ride over...and I found this." He carefully unwrapped a piece of letter from the handle, revealing carvings. Nik stood from his spot, slowly walking to the edge of the barrier.
"And what do you think this is?" Nik asked as I came to stand beside him, coffee gripped tightly in my hand.
"It's called a cryptex," Caroline announced, springing up from her seated position. Tyler gave her an odd look, to which she replied with, "I've seen 'The Da Vinci Code.'" You turn the different sides to the different symbols to get the translation on the other side." Tyler slowly turned the handle, demonstrating what Caroline was saying. "And with the help of the internet." she picked up a stack of papers, showed them to us. "Elena sent over these. So now all we have to do is cryptex away. If you happened to want to help, we wouldn't stop you."
"Sorry, I don't know how to translate Cryptext," I said, shaking my head at the girl.
"Right, well, might I suggest using the magic of the internet to purchase an Aramaic-to-English dictionary from your nearest retailer?"
"What's Aramaic?" Tyler asked, turning to glance at Caroline, who looked just as confused.
"It's a dead language," Caroline said, eyes flickering between Tyler and my uncle. "It hasn't been used since, like, biblical times."
"We were alive during those times," I chuckled, sitting down on the coffee table.
"Qetsiyah's native tongue, I'm guessing," Nik declared, grinning. "You know, even if you had the best dictionary in the world, it could take days to translate. Perhaps weeks."
"What my uncle is getting at is that he knows Aramaic," I informed them with a sigh.
"In bas so teen too ara ma eet," Nik said, proving to them that he knew the language.
