Annabelle
ONCE THE BARRIER was lifted, I didn't move. "It seems the spell has lifted. Time to get out of here," Nik said, pressing his hand to the area the barrier once was. I squeezed my eyes tightly as he stepped out of the barrier.
"I'll be home later," I said quietly. "I need some time."
"Better call Elijah before he flips," Nik told me. "I'm sure he knows of Kol's death by now and if he doesn't, he will know soon."
"I will." He nodded before leaving, heading outside. I pulled my knees to my chest, not bothering to reach for my phone. There was no energy left in me to actually talk to someone, even if it was the one person who would comfort me the most. The front door clicked open again, the sound of footsteps coming closer.
"I told you I'll be some soon, Uncle Nik," I said, my eyes still closed.
"It's not Klaus," Caroline's voice cut into my thoughts as she took a seat beside me. "I'm sorry about Kol."
"Thanks." My chin wobbled as I opened my eyes, peering up at her. "I, uh, should get going. I can't bear to look at that spot anymore."
"Right," Caroline nodded, her hand gently resting on my shoulder. "I'm going to see if I can get the mark out. Do you...do you want me to drive you home?"
"No," I shook my head. "I need some air."
"Okay." She allowed me to stand before following after me, hovering in the doorway. "Belle."
"Yeah?" I turned around to face my best friend, watching her face morph into one riddled with sadness and guilt.
"I'm sorry about how things went down."
"Me too," I agreed, stepping closer to the girl as I wrapped my arms around her shoulder. "Thank you, for being the best friend I could have asked for. I promise, I will do my best to protect Tyler but there's only so much I can do."
"I know," Caroline whispered, squeezing me tightly.

My finger lightly trailed across the dusty bats in Kol's room, the ones he kept in there that were merely to look at rather than use. He always insisted that one day, these bats would be mine. A gift from him.
I guess today was the day that I finally got them. I grabbed his favorite bat, a stainless steel one. My fingers lightly brushed against the cold metal, sending a tingling feeling up my body.
He was one of my closest friends, even as a child. Kol, along with the rest of my destroyed family, was the closest thing that I had left to my childhood--my humanity. I had been sitting here all day, staring at his things as I tried to convince myself that Kol was coming back; that this was all one big nightmare.
