MY NEXT MISSION was to find Jeremy and convince him to go with me. "I thought I might find you here," I commented as I approached a table where Jeremy sitting, nursing a water and plate of food. He was sitting alone in the Grill. "Sitting here alone on a Friday night is kind of depressing."
"Yeah, I got ditched," Jeremy admitted as I slid into the seat in front of him. I gave him a sad smile.
"Sorry," I told him but he shrugged it off.
"It's fine. The better question is why are you searching for me? Missed me already," Jeremy teased. I grinned at him but shook my head, denying his accusations.
"Of course not. But I have a question," I said, watching as he took a sip of his drink before nodding, urging me to continue. "You know about Miss Mystic Falls, correct?"
"Yeah," Jeremy nodded. "My sisters in it."
"Right," I tried to come as confident rather than nervous, but the nervousness was beginning to seep into my tone. "Caroline roped me into being in it."
"Wow," Jeremy laughed. "I didn't picture you being next Miss Mystic."
I shook my head, rolling my eyes. "I most certainly will not be picked seeing as I'm a last-minute fill-in with no connections and no interview. Yet I need a date and I was hoping that maybe, just maybe, you'd do me a favor and be my date?"
"I don't do pageants," Jeremy defended, clearly trying to let me down lightly. I reached over, clutching his hand in mine.
"Please, Jeremy. I don't know anybody else here and the other guys Caroline tries to set me up with are just horny guys who want me for my looks," I explained. Jeremy opened his mouth to say something but quickly closed it, his eyes flickering over my shoulder. Confused, I turned to see what he was looking at there. There was a young girl with dark black hair standing at the entrance, watching us closely.
Jeremy immediately shuffled to his feet, glancing down at me. "I'll, uh, think about it," he assured me, moving past me.
"I need to know before tomorrow afternoon!" I called after him as he left, barely throwing an acknowledgment toward me. He left his half-eaten food behind with me staring at him with confusion as he ran over to a girl.
Realization dawned on me. Whatever I felt for Jeremy was stupid, he clearly wasn't into me. Suddenly, my phone began to ring and I sighed as I saw the caller ID.
My eyes flickered over to Jeremy, who was preoccupied, before I left the Grill. I sped away in case the caller tried to determine my location and heard people talking in the background.
"What, Uncle Nik?" I snapped as I picked up the phone, rolling my eyes.
"Now, love, remember I am still your uncle and you cannot talk to me like that," Uncle Nik reminded me in a stern voice, something that always annoyed me. "And don't roll your eyes."
