Annabelle
THAT NIGHT, DAD took me home and placed me in my bed, planting a kiss on my head before he fled Mystic Falls, much to his demise. He said he didn't want to leave me in this state but could not stay here, so he left Bekah to look after me.
Dad mentioned something about finding an answer, though I didn't really know what he meant. Besides, he was going to be back in a week for me. Honestly, I was surprised he was being lenient on letting me stay here. A few centuries ago, I would never have been left on my own without him.
Yet I knew he understood that this was where I needed to be, with all the people I called friends. Really, I just wanted to be with Bekah, Caroline, and Jeremy.
After rolling around in my bed until well past midnight, I climbed out of my bed and headed down the hall, where my uncle's bedroom was. His room was perfectly neat, as usual, and still smelled like him.
My fingertips dragged across his dresser as I passed it, my eyes settling on the pictures on his dresser. One of them was me, him, and my father before our whole family fell apart. I picked up the frame, smiling at the memory. It seemed to be one of the only things in this room-other than art- that showed he actually cared for us.
However, the longer I looked at it, the more painful it became so I set it back down. Eventually, I made my way to his bed and pulled the covers back, slipping under them. I squeezed my eyes shut as I began crying again, my arms moving to wrap around his pillow.
Hours later, I woke up and it was midday. My phone had gone off sometime during the night and I was certainly not expecting the text I woke up to.
'Elena's dead. She's in transition.'
Was it bad to say I was almost relieved to hear that news? That meant Alaric was gone and I could stay in Mystic Falls. I sat up in Nik's bed, immediately calling my father.
"Are you okay, Annabelle?" He asked as soon as he answered, sounding worried. "Do you need me to come back?"
"No, actually." My voice was hoarse from crying all night. "You don't need to come back to get me. Elena's dead, which means Alaric is too. They were linked so all is safe here."
Dad sighed loudly. "I don't like the idea of you being there without me."
"Dad, I was here long before you showed up, remember? And I was on my own with no friends and terrible blood control. Things are different now. I have friend, control, and I have aunt Bekah," I explained to him, trying to ease his worries as I closed my sore eyes, leaning my head back. "Please, just let me stay. It's the only thing I'm asking of you."
"Well, perhaps I could make an exception just this once," Dad said and it made me smile. "I have some... business to attend to that would be safer if you weren't with me, but after that, I am coming to get you without your argument."
