"DO WE REALLY have to go over this again," I sighed, my phone pressed between my ear and shoulder.

"Yes, we do." my uncle sounded annoyed. "Because I'm going to have to come fetch you once you've decided you're done with your childish acts."

I let out a harsh laugh. "You want to talk about childish acts? You daggered our whole family because you were mad."

"Technically it's not our whole family. I never daggered you," Uncle Nik pointed out. I crossed my arms as I glanced around the entrance of Caroline's home. Since she was new to all of this, Stefan and I volunteered to help her with everything but of course, my uncle had to do his weekly check-in.

"Yeah, because you care too much," I said, rolling my eyes. Deep down, I loved my uncle with everything in me but he had pushed it too far this time. "Look, I love you and I'm not really mad anymore, I just need some space from you."

"Ouch, you wound me, love," Uncle Nik said and it was unclear if I actually hurt his feelings or if he was joking. I nodded at Bonnie as she passed me, exiting the house. Don't get me wrong, Bonnie wasn't my favorite person but I could at least play nice. "But I love you too, little one."

"I'll talk to you next week," I informed him as Stefan and Caroline came downstairs.

"Wait-" my uncle stopped me from hanging up on him.

"What is it?" I asked. Stefan was eying me, confused about who I was talking to.

"You'll call if you need me, right? I mean, if your nightmares start up again or if you want me to..." He cleared his throat. "Help you fall back asleep, I'm just a phone call away. One word and I'll be there."

My cheeks flushed red as I tried to shut him up. "Yes, yes, I know Uncle Nik. Now I've really got to go."

"Goodbye, love." I didn't say another word before hanging up, shooting Stefan and Caroline an awkward smile.

"So what do I do when I see the rabbit?" Caroline asked as we walked through the woods.

"Chase it, catch it, feed on it," Stefan explained. The poor rabbits that have been eaten out here.

"Isn't killing cute, defenseless animals the first step in becoming a serial killer?" Caroline was very talkative, not that that was surprising.

"That's what I'm saying. I always feel bad when I kill them," I spoke up. Oh boy, Stefan already looked mildly irritated.

"Well, you sort of skipped serial killer and went straight to vampire," Stefan said. "Hey, Caroline, if you're not serious about this, I think you should tell me."

"No, I am." Caroline sighed before seeing the pointed look Stefan gave her. "Look, I swear that I am! Okay? But it's just...I haven't been in the sun for days and everybody was at the swimming hole having fun and Matt is there, and he finally told me that he loved me. But I've been blowing him off, and now you want me to eat bunnies and I'm kind of freaking out, okay?"
