Annabelle

THE NEXT NIGHT, I was forced to meet up with my father so he could feed me blood. We met up at the same park but this time I arrived first.

"I brought you blood bags," Dad said, his voice drawing my attention away from people gazing. "Just in case tonight doesn't go as well as I expect it to."

"Thank you," I said gratefully, climbing to my feet. "I don't see why I need to feed off humans though."

Dad neatly interlocked his hands in front of him, a small smile on his face. "You don't need to, not with how small this town is. But it helps control, which you need if you are going to be around humans. Are you going to school?"

"I am," I nodded. "Most days."

Dad's left eye narrowed ever so slightly, something I think he did without noticing it. "Most days?"

"I...tend to skip school sometimes," I admitted, shaking my head. "But that's not the point. Let's just get this human control thing over with."

"Right. We can revisit the topic of school later," Dad agreed, pushing himself to his feet. His eyes scanned the park, looking for our victim. "Come with me."

"Dad," I said his name so quietly that without vampire hearing, I was certain he wouldn't have heard it.

"What is it?" He turned back to face me, looking at me calmly.

"What if-" My voice cracked and I quickly cleared my throat, hoping he wouldn't pick up on. However, it seemed he had. Dad took three large strides until he stood in front of me, his hand reaching up to brush away a tear I hadn't even realized had fallen. "What if I can't stop."

"You will," Dad said, sounding overconfident. "I'm right here. Every step of the way."

"But I couldn't stop the other night. I would have killed that girl," I told him.

"But you did."

"I almost did," I argued, sniffling as I met his eyes.

"Yet you didn't. There is a difference, Ann. Now, come on. The only way to give you more confidence is practice," Dad said, nudging his head in the direction he wanted me to walk with him. With a heavy sigh, I gave in, knowing that I wouldn't be getting out of this.

There was a small, petite girl walking close to the tree lines and was an easy target. She had on scrubs, indicating that she was some sort of nurse. He moved calmly towards her, effortlessly compelling her to follow us past the tree line. Of course, she did as she was instructed.

Once he deemed we were safe enough in the forest, he stopped with a nod. His eyes found mine, urging me to continue. "Go on now. You know what to do." After a moment of hesitation, I sucked in a deep breath before stepping forward. My hands found her shoulders as I pushed her hair away from her neck. "You are just fine, Annabelle. I'm right here to stop you if you go too far."
