CHAE TOOK A DEEP BREATH.
Her heart was pounding in her chest as she walked into Miyagi-Do. She stopped, and her eyes scanned the backyard for Eli. She spotted him talking to Miguel and Robby. Chae froze in place. She couldn't seem to walk, despite how much she kept telling herself to. It was as if her brain wasn't properly communicating with the muscles in her legs. All she could do was stand there, looking at him as he talked to his friends.
Chae turned when she felt a hand touch her shoulder. Achara stood next to her, smiling as Sam stood beside her. Achara removed her hand from Chae's shoulder.
"Is everything okay?" Achara asked.
Chae sighed. "No."
Sam's eyebrows furrowed together, concern in her voice as she spoke. "What's wrong?"
"I can't bring myself to tell him," Chae told them. "I can't even walk over there."
Achara grabbed ahold of Chae's shoulders and turned her around so that she was facing her. Chae's eyes went wide, having no idea what was happening.
"Listen to me, Kim Chae-Rin; you are going to walk over there with your head held high, and you're going to ask him out on a date," Achara told her, looking the girl directly in the eyes. "You are beautiful, funny, and a total sweetheart despite everything you've been through. You deserve happiness, and right now, that boy—for whatever reason—makes you happy."
"She's right," Sam agreed. "You deserve to be happy, Chae."
"Okay," Chae responded, glancing back and forth at the two girls. "So, I just walk over there?"
Achara nodded. "Exactly, and remember, hold your head up high."
Achara let go of her shoulders and turned her around so that she was facing Hawk's direction once more. Chae froze again, and Achara gave her a light nudge. Chae shuffled her feet as she stared down at the grass, but then she remembered what Achara said. Chae picked her head up and straightened her posture.
With her head held high, Chae continued making her way through the backyard. She stopped when she stood in front of Hawk. The boy's face lit up instantly when he saw her. Miguel and Robby excused themselves and walked away, letting the two talk.
Hawk furrowed his eyebrows. "Is everything okay?"
Chae nodded her head. She looked over her shoulder at Achara and Sam. The two girls smiled at her, holding their thumbs up in front of them. Chae turned to face Hawk again, her heart continuing to race.
"I would like to ask you a question," Chae told him.
"What is it?" Hawk asked.
Chae breathed in through her nose and then exhaled. "Would you like to date with me? No—that wasn't right. Would you like to go to a date with me?" Chae shook her head. "What I mean is, would you date on a go with me?"
