CHAE PUSHED THE GROCERY BASKET INTO THE CART RETURN.

She had just finished helping Amanda with grocery shopping and offered to put the cart back. With the cart against the others, Chae turned around. She was fully prepared to look both ways before she crossed the aisle and strolled back to Amanda's car, which was a little ways further down the parking lot, but the sight of a familiar face caused her to freeze into place. Chae sucked in a breath, feeling as though her heart had stopped for a brief moment before she began to breathe again. She stared straight ahead, unsure of what to do.

And staring back at her was her mother.

As Chae looked at the woman in front of her, all of the words she had wanted to say to her had suddenly failed her.

"Chae-Rin," Da-Eun spoke, her tone as sharp as Chae remembered it.

Chae shook her head. "That's it? That's all you have to say? My name? Why are you here? You left me all alone. You abandoned me."

Da-Eun scoffed, and her top lip curled up as she snickered. "Do not be dramatic, Chae-Rin. I did not abandon you."

"Yes, you did!" Chae shouted, causing someone walking in the parking lot to turn and stare. "You just left me all alone after everything went down at Cobra Kai. It's been months, and I have tried to contact you, but you never messaged me back. You just left me alone for months!"

Da-Eun opened her mouth to reply, but Chae did not give her the chance to speak.

"No," Chae said quickly, causing the woman to close her mouth abruptly in shock. "You don't get to say anything. Not after what you did—after everything you've done. The LaRussos and my friends have helped me realize that everything you've done to me—the way you've treated me my entire childhood—was abuse and that I deserve better than that. I deserve better than you."

"Abuse?" Da-Eun shook her head. "I never abused you."

Chae nodded her head. "You did. Just because you never hit me doesn't mean you didn't abuse me. There's more than one way to abuse someone."

Da-Eun was silent, her eyebrows furrowed together as if she were wrapped up in deep thought.

"After Cobra Kai went down, the LaRussos took me in," Chae told her. "They've been kind to me. They've helped me work through a lot of things. They have given me confidence."

Da-Eun's eyes fell to the ground before she looked up and crossed her arms. "It does not matter how much confidence they give you. You think they will choose you over their own daughter? Or over Achara—their All Valley champ? Over Nichols?"

Chae gulped. Her shoulders sank. Negative thoughts began to fill her head. She's right. You're nothing compared to them. You really think they care about you? You're pathetic.
