DECHA SAT IN A CIRCLE, GATHERED WITH THE OTHER MEMBERS OF HIS AA GROUP.
He had just finished listening to one of the newcomers describe their experiences. He remembered how scary that feeling was—how it felt to be the new guy and feel like everyone else was judging you for the mistakes you had made. But in reality, they were all one and the same, people who wanted to make things right and better their lives and their relationships with themselves and those they love. Decha was truly grateful for the AA meetings and the support that he received over the course of his journey to getting sober.
And though the experience had started mainly for his love for Demetri, Decha had continued for himself after the realization that he had never been happier.
"How about you, Decha?" William, the chairperson asked. "Would you like to share how things have been going for you?"
Decha nodded. "Uh, yeah. Sure." He cleared his throat before continuing. "I've been sober for about six months now, and I'm honestly the happiest I've been in a really long time. My relationship with my parents has been absolutely... it's just amazing. My father and I are actually getting along and having conversations. It's crazy how much we've all changed. How much I've changed."
"That's great," William told him.
"Yeah," Decha replied with a nod. "And we have that karate competition coming up—you know, the one I mentioned last meeting? The Sekai Taikai. We find out where it's going to be held soon. We're all really looking forward to it."
William smiled. "Well, we all wish you and the rest of your dojo the very best in the tournament, don't we?"
William glanced around the room. A few of the other members verbally responded, while some simply nodded their heads. Decha thanked them and leaned back in his chair as he listened to the next person start talking.
When the meeting ended, Decha stayed behind to help clean up. He was stacking the chairs on top of each other when William approached him. He called out Decha's name, causing him to stop and turn around.
"Is everything okay?" Decha asked.
William nodded. "Absolutely, don't worry. I just wanted to tell you that I'm proud of the progress you've made. Not a lot of people your age are willing to admit they have a problem, let alone continue to actively accept help."
"Oh," Decha responded. "Yeah, well, I know I've said it so many times before, but I was just so tired of burning bridges, you know? I wanted to be better—do better. For everyone I love. For myself."
"And that's exactly why meetings such as this exist," William told him. "Keep up the great work, Decha. So many faces have come in and out of this program in the past six months, and you're one of the only ones who have continued to strive."
