CHAE WALKED INTO THE LARUSSO HOUSE.

She slipped off her shoes and placed them on the shoe rack by the door. She began to walk up the stairs, only managing to place her foot on the first step before she paused due to hearing her name being called out from the living room. Chae recognized the voice as Amanda's, and her tone came out as more of a question. Chae walked into the living room, standing in the doorway. Amanda and Daniel were seated on the couch. They both had their heads turned in her direction.

"How was training?" Amanda asked her. "You didn't work yourself too hard, I hope."

Chae froze for a moment. She debated whether to shake her head and say no or to tell the truth outright. Amanda always seemed to know when she wasn't being truthful. Chae didn't know how she did it, but it was as if the woman had some sort of superpower for detecting lies. Chae could never get anything past her.

"I might have gone a little overboard," Chae admitted, taking a seat in one of the chairs. "But Eli already gave me a talk about it—about not working myself too hard. I just want to be the best. I want to make everyone proud."

"Oh, honey, everyone is proud of you," Amanda told her, a calm and soothing tone in her voice. "You don't need to push yourself to the limit in order to prove that."

"She's right," Daniel agreed, nodding his head. "You've worked hard, Chae, and you've come a long way. We've all seen how much you've grown and learned, but pushing yourself to the brink of exhaustion is never the way to go."

"I know," Chae nodded her head. "I just let my mother in my head. I still hear her voice."

"What does she say to you?" Amanda asked curiously.

"That I am weak," Chae replied, starting to tear up. "That I am nothing. That I need to follow the Way of the Fist because it is the only way."

Amanda reached forward and grabbed Chae's hands. "None of that is true. Do you understand me? None of it."

"I know." Chae sniffled. "I just know how to make her go away, and I listen to her, and I lose control. I try to find my balance and push her out of my head, but it's hard."

Amanda gave her hand a reassuring squeeze. "Listen to me, Chae, I've told you so many times before that you are not the things your mother has said you are. You're not weak or fragile. You're strong. You're made of steel, and you're brave as hell. Do you hear me?"

Chae nodded her head, sniffling as she smiled.

"No mother would say or do the things she had done," Amanda continued, raising her hand to tuck Chae's hair behind her ear.
