THE MORNING ACTIVITIES HAD NOT GONE WELL FOR MIYAGI-DO.
They were near the bottom of the leaderboard, and struggled to find their balance. They felt defeated and inadequate compared to the other dojos. A cloud of doubt rained down on all of their shoulders and their confidence only seemed to evaporate.
Johnny and Daniel had conflicted views about how they expected their students to perform. While Daniel wanted balance and a slow approach, Johnny wanted a quick and aggressive attack. Their conflicting methods of teaching had done nothing but distract their students from fighting.
After the first round of fighting was over, the dojos were sent back to the hotel to rest. The students of the combined Miyagi-Do and Eagle Fang dojo were gathered in the lobby, standing in front of their two senseis.
"Everyone, listen up," Daniel spoke up. "All right. This morning's event was tough, but let's not get discouraged just yet."
Achara sighed, looking down as she crossed her arms against her chest. Tough was an understatement.
"We have two more events today and eliminations don't begin until the second one," Daniel continued.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa, if that was the elimination round, then what is?" Demetri questioned, taken back. "Getting our heads cut off with swords?"
Decha placed his hand on Demetri's shoulder and pat it gently.
"We knew this wasn't gonna be easy," Daniel reminded everyone. "We're going up against the best dojos in the world, but don't forget you guys are one of 'em too."
"Yeah, so you better start fighting like it," Johnny chimed in with a nod.
Daniel shook his head in disapproval. "Johnny, come on, man. The best thing you can do right now is just clear your minds, get some rest, you know, put this behind you. You got this, all right? I believe in you. All right, come on, let's go."
Daniel clapped his hands together and the students began to walk towards the elevators.
"Hey, Diaz!"
Miguel turned on his heels at the sound of his last name being spoken. He recognized that voice and when he turned and was met with Maddox, he couldn't help but smile. The others stopped, looking at the two as they stood in front of each other.
"You guys go ahead," Miguel told them. "I'll catch up."
Achara gave him a questioning look. Miguel had missed it as he turned around to face Maddox. But she hadn't missed it. Maddox watched the Miyagi-Do students walk away before she shifted her attention to Miguel.
