ACHARA SAT WITH SAM, TORY, AND CHAE ON THE COUCH.
After the disastrous attempt to communicate with spirits using the Ouija board, the four girls were laughing as they showed each other funny videos. Achara had her head resting on Sam's shoulder as she watched the girl scroll through videos on Instagram. She laughed at a video of a cat chasing its own tail as it spun around in circles. Sam looked down at her and smiled, laughing along with her.
Tory turned her phone towards the two girls, showing them a video. She spoke between laughs. "Look at this one."
Sam and Achara turned their heads. They both giggled at the compilation video of babies with contagious laughter. When the video was over, Sam and Achara turned their attention back to Sam's phone. She continued to scroll and landed on a video of a dog who looked like he was talking.
"Have you seen this one?" Sam asked Tory, turning her phone toward her. "It looks like the dog is actually talking."
Tory started laughing as she watched the video. Achara couldn't help but smile. Sam and Tory were laughing together, and that was more than she could have ever imagined. She didn't think it would ever be possible, but the past few months and the sleepover proved that anything was possible.
Chae let out a loud sigh, causing the three girls to stop laughing and look at her.
"Is everything okay, Chae?" Sam questioned.
Chae turned her head. "Huh? What?"
"You sighed," Sam told her. "I just asked if everything was okay."
"Oh," Chae responded, nodding her head. "Everything is fine. I just... I've been trying to contact my mom, but she hasn't answered my texts or calls."
Chae scrolled through her messages, showing dozens of unread text messages. Achara lifted her head off Sam's shoulder and sat up, giving Chae a sympathetic look. Achara placed her hand on Chae's shoulder in an attempt to comfort her.
"I know that I shouldn't care because she abandoned me and that I have Amanda, who is kind of my mom now," Chae continued to speak. "But she's my mother. She's the woman who raised me. Does she really not care about me? Does she not care about how I'm doing? If I'm okay?"
Sam frowned. "I'm so sorry, Chae. You truly deserve so much better."
Chae sighed. "Everyone always says that, and I know it's true. But sometimes I think I deserve nothing at all. That's what my mother always told me."
Achara shook her head, rubbing Chae's shoulder softly. "Hey, that's not true. You have been through so much, Chae. You deserve a family that loves you and treats you like an actual human being, not a product of their own creation—not some weapon. And you deserve to feel loved and happiness."
