The sun had set, and the air was filled with the warm glow of string lights hanging on the porch. You and Rafe had decided to spend the evening together at his family's beach house, a cozy escape from the chaos of the Outer Banks. The sound of waves crashing against the shore created a soothing backdrop as you settled into the comfortable cushions of the outdoor lounge area.Rafe was already set up with snacks—popcorn, some of your favorite candy, and a few drinks—everything you needed for a perfect movie night. He reached over, grabbing a handful of popcorn and tossing it in his mouth with that playful grin of his that always made your heart flutter. "You ready for this?" he asked, his blue eyes sparkling with excitement.
You smiled back, your heart racing as you settled deeper into the cushions. "Definitely. I've been looking forward to this all week."
As he clicked the remote and the screen lit up, you couldn't help but admire how the soft light highlighted his features. Rafe was beautiful, and not just because of his looks; it was the way he made you feel—safe and cherished.
The movie started, and you tried to focus, but your mind kept drifting. You snuck glances at him, stealing moments to take in the way he relaxed, his arm casually resting on the back of the couch, fingers almost brushing your shoulder. Each brush sent a small thrill through you, igniting a warmth in your chest.
Halfway through the film, you felt a wave of anxiety wash over you. Being out in public sometimes triggered your social anxiety, but with Rafe, it was different. He always knew how to make you feel at ease, but tonight, you couldn't shake the feeling of unease creeping in.
Rafe must have sensed something was off. He paused the movie, turning to you, his expression shifting from carefree to concerned. "Hey, what's wrong?"
You hesitated, feeling your cheeks heat up. "I just... I don't know. I guess I'm just feeling a bit overwhelmed," you admitted, your voice barely above a whisper.
Rafe's demeanor softened, and he leaned closer, his eyes locking onto yours. "You know you can tell me anything, right? If something's bothering you, I want to help."
The sincerity in his voice made your heart swell. "I know, it's just... sometimes I feel like I can't breathe when too many people are around. Even here, I guess."
He nodded, processing your words. "Then let's forget the movie for now. We can talk, or we can just sit here in silence. Whatever you need."
You smiled, gratitude washing over you. Rafe always made sure you felt comfortable, and it meant the world to you. "Thanks, Rafe. Just being here with you is enough," you said softly.
"Good. I'm here for you, always," he said, his voice steady and reassuring. He shifted closer, wrapping his arm around you and pulling you into his side. You nestled against him, feeling the warmth radiating from his body.
As you settled against him, the world outside faded away. The gentle sound of the waves crashing against the shore and the soft rustling of leaves filled the air. Rafe rested his chin on your head, the familiar scent of his cologne mixed with the salty breeze enveloping you.
Minutes passed in comfortable silence, and you felt the tension gradually ease from your shoulders. Rafe's fingers gently played with your hair, and the soothing motion helped ground you further. "You know," he began, breaking the quiet, "I used to think that being out here was just about having fun with friends. But now? I realize it's these quiet moments with you that I cherish the most."
Your heart raced at his words, warmth flooding your cheeks. "Really?"
"Yeah," he replied, a shy smile creeping onto his lips. "You're special to me, Y/N More than you know."
You turned your face up to meet his gaze, your breath catching in your throat. "You're special to me too, Rafe."
He leaned in, closing the space between you, and your heart raced as his lips met yours in a soft, lingering kiss. It felt like the world around you disappeared, and in that moment, nothing else mattered.
When you pulled away, Rafe's eyes sparkled with affection. "See? You're already feeling better," he said, grinning.
"Yeah, I am," you admitted, feeling lighter than you had all night. "Thank you for being you."
"Always. And if you ever need a moment, you can always tell me to pause the world," he replied, squeezing you tighter.
As the night continued, you felt a newfound sense of peace wash over you. With Rafe by your side, you knew that you could face anything that came your way.
