You were sitting on the porch of the Cameron's beach house, watching the waves crash against the shore as the sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink. It was supposed to be a peaceful evening, but your thoughts were far from calm. You'd spent the day hanging out with Rafe, Topper, and Kelce at the beach, but something had shifted during a casual conversation that left you feeling unsettled.
Topper had been his usual cocky self, making fun of Rafe's serious relationship with you. It started as a joke, harmless enough, but then he began pushing boundaries.
"You know, man, I'm surprised you're not getting sick of her yet," Topper had said, nudging Rafe with his elbow. "You two are like a walking romance novel or something. Always attached at the hip."
You tried to laugh it off, but the tone in Topper's voice made it hard to ignore.
Then, as if to turn the knife, Topper looked directly at you. "What, y/n? You seriously think Rafe's gonna stay interested in you? You know how he is." His eyes narrowed, and you could hear the mocking edge in his voice. "You're not really his type, are you?"
You felt the heat rise in your cheeks. It wasn't like you hadn't heard the rumors before, but hearing it from Topper, who was usually the guy who just teased, made it sting a little harder. You excused yourself from the conversation, trying to hold back the tears that had suddenly threatened to spill.
Rafe had followed you, his concern obvious as he stood beside you. But when you tried to tell him how you felt, he brushed it off.
"It's just Topper being Topper," Rafe said, shrugging it off. "He didn't mean anything by it."
But that didn't make you feel any better. Topper's words hung in the air like a bad smell, and you couldn't shake them.
Now, as you sat on the porch, Rafe's silhouette appeared in the doorway. His face softened when he saw you, and he walked over, sitting beside you on the swing.
"Hey, you okay?" he asked quietly, brushing a strand of hair from your face. You tried to smile, but it came out weak.
"I'm fine," you said, though you weren't sure you even believed it yourself. "Just... tired."
Rafe studied you for a moment, clearly not convinced. "What happened with Topper? He said something, didn't he?"
You let out a frustrated sigh. "I don't know why he has to do that. It's like every time we hang out, he makes a point of making fun of us, making it seem like we're some kind of joke."
Rafe looked conflicted for a moment before his expression hardened. "He's a dick, and I'll talk to him about it. I don't want you to feel like that. Ever."
Before you could say anything else, the sound of footsteps interrupted the moment. You looked up to see Topper walking toward the porch, a hesitant look on his face.
Rafe stood up, his posture stiffening as Topper approached. "You need to apologize to her," Rafe said, his voice sharp.
Topper raised his hands in mock surrender. "I didn't mean to make her upset," he said, his tone surprisingly apologetic. "I was just messing around, you know? Didn't think it would bother her."
But you couldn't help the hurt that flashed across your face, and Rafe noticed immediately. He turned to you, his voice low and protective. "Don't let him off easy. He crossed a line."
Topper's face scrunched up in confusion. "What are you talking about? It was just a joke."
Kelce, who had been standing nearby, overheard and joined the conversation. "Dude, what the hell was that for?" he asked, his voice stern. "You can't just throw around stuff like that, especially about Rafe and (Y/N). You've got to stop acting like it's all some kind of game."
Topper looked taken aback for a moment, clearly not used to being called out like this. "I didn't think it would get to her," he muttered, glancing at you. "Sorry, y/n. I didn't mean to make you feel bad. I was just... messing around."
You took a deep breath, feeling a mixture of emotions. You didn't want to let Topper's words get to you, but they had. "It's fine," you said, trying to sound like you meant it. "Just don't do it again."
Rafe stepped closer to you, his hand resting on your shoulder as he glanced at Topper. "You need to show some respect, man. Y/n's important to me, and I won't let you disrespect her."
Topper nodded, running a hand through his hair. "I get it. Won't happen again."
As Topper turned to walk away, Kelce shot him one last look. "You really need to think before you speak next time," he muttered under his breath, and you couldn't help but appreciate how Kelce had stepped in.
Rafe turned back to you, his hand gently cupping your cheek. "Are you okay now?" he asked, his voice soft but filled with concern.
You nodded, finally letting yourself relax into his touch. "Yeah, I'm good. Just... don't let him get to me next time."
Rafe smiled, his eyes full of affection. "I won't. I've got you."
You leaned into him, feeling the tension leave your body. It wasn't always going to be smooth sailing with Rafe's friends, but with him by your side, you knew you'd always have someone who would stand up for you.
And that was enough.
This version includes more of the interaction with Topper, his apology, and Kelce's reaction to him crossing the line.
