It had been a long week. Between school, work, and just the daily grind, you were both in need of a break. When Rafe had suggested a spontaneous getaway to a secluded beach near the Outer Banks, you couldn't say no. The idea of escaping for a day of sun, sand, and doing absolutely nothing sounded perfect.
You found yourself in the passenger seat of Rafe's truck, the windows rolled down, wind in your hair, and the salty air filling your lungs. Rafe was driving, his hand resting casually on the wheel as he hummed along to the music playing through the speakers.
"This was a good idea," you said, looking out the window at the rolling hills and ocean beyond. "We both needed this."
Rafe glanced over at you, a grin spreading across his face. "I know. Nothing like getting away from it all, just you and me, no distractions."
You leaned back in your seat, relaxing for the first time in days. The way Rafe said "you and me" made everything feel easy and right, like this was the way things were meant to be. You loved how he could make the simplest moments feel special.
"You've got the perfect getaway plan, you know that?" you said, turning your head to catch his eye.
Rafe raised an eyebrow, a playful smirk tugging at his lips. "I try. But I've gotta keep you on your toes. Can't let you get bored."
You laughed, giving him a sidelong glance. "Well, I'm not complaining. I mean, look at this view."
As the truck rumbled along the dirt road toward the beach, the sound of the waves grew louder. When you finally arrived, the beach was nearly deserted, save for a few scattered people in the distance. It was exactly what you both needed—a peaceful spot to unwind.
You jumped out of the truck, your feet sinking into the warm sand, and stretched your arms overhead. "I think I could get used to this."
Rafe followed you out, tossing a beach bag over his shoulder. "You should. We've got the whole day. Just relax."
You turned to face him, grinning. "I'll try. But with you around, I'm not sure how much relaxing is gonna happen."
He looked at you, eyes sparkling with that familiar mischievous gleam. "Oh, really? You think I'm trouble?"
You crossed your arms, raising an eyebrow. "You're always trouble."
Rafe feigned a dramatic gasp. "Me? Trouble? Never."
You chuckled, rolling your eyes. "Let's just get to the water before you come up with another one of your ridiculous ideas."
The two of you walked down the beach, the sound of the waves crashing against the shore filling the air. Rafe grabbed your hand, swinging it back and forth between you, making you laugh at the simplest thing. His presence was enough to make everything else fade away.
Once you reached the water, you kicked off your shoes and let the cool waves lap at your feet. You couldn't remember the last time you'd felt this free. You glanced at Rafe, who was standing next to you, staring out at the horizon. His expression softened, the usual mischief replaced with something deeper.
"You know," he said, voice quiet, "this is nice. Just being here with you."
You smiled at him, feeling the warmth of the sun on your skin. "It is. I'm glad we did this."
Rafe turned toward you, his smile returning. "Me too. You deserve this."
Before you could say anything else, he suddenly scooped you up into his arms and twirled you around, making you squeal in surprise. "Rafe! What are you—"
He laughed, spinning you once more before setting you back down. "Come on, I had to do something fun while we're here."
You shoved him playfully, but there was no hiding the smile on your face. "You're ridiculous, but I love you anyway."
Rafe's grin softened, his gaze growing a little more intense. "I love you too, more than you know."
The air between you two felt charged, not with anything crazy, but with a quiet understanding. The world around you seemed to disappear for a moment, leaving just the two of you standing there on the beach, your hands tangled together as the waves crashed in the background.
You were snapped out of the moment when Rafe suddenly ran toward the water, calling over his shoulder. "Last one in is a rotten egg!"
You laughed, chasing after him, the sound of your laughter mingling with the crashing waves. The rest of the afternoon passed in a blur of playful water fights, lazy sunbathing, and shared stories that made you feel closer to him than ever before.
As the sun began to set, painting the sky with shades of pink and orange, you sat on the sand, Rafe's arm around your shoulders. You rested your head against him, feeling content and at peace.
"Best getaway ever," you said quietly, your voice barely above a whisper.
Rafe kissed the top of your head, squeezing you closer. "Only because you're with me."
You smiled, your heart full. "And you make everything an adventure."
With Rafe by your side, even the simplest moments felt extraordinary. And as the night stretched on, with the stars beginning to twinkle above, you couldn't help but think that this was exactly where you were meant to be—right here with him.
