It was supposed to be a chill evening. The two of you had planned to meet up with a few friends for a bonfire on the beach, but somehow, things always turned into an adventure when Rafe was involved. You had arrived earlier to help set everything up—marshmallows, sticks, blankets, the works. The sun was just dipping below the horizon, painting the sky in fiery reds and soft pinks.
Rafe showed up fashionably late, carrying a duffel bag slung over one shoulder and a devil-may-care grin plastered on his face.
"What's in the bag?" you asked, eyeing him suspiciously.
"Fireworks," he said nonchalantly, plopping the bag down on the sand.
Your eyes widened. "Fireworks? Rafe, are you serious? This is supposed to be a bonfire, not a Fourth of July party!"
"Relax," he said, leaning down to kiss your forehead. "They're just for fun. Besides, don't act like you're not a little excited."
You sighed but couldn't help the small smile that crept onto your lips. "You're unbelievable."
"That's why you love me," he said with a wink, already pulling out one of the smaller fireworks and inspecting it like he was some kind of pyrotechnics expert.
The night progressed, and everything seemed normal—well, as normal as things could be with Rafe. The fire was roaring, music was playing from someone's portable speaker, and you were huddled under a blanket with him, watching the waves crash under the moonlight.
But then, of course, Rafe decided it was time to up the ante.
"Alright, everyone!" he announced, standing up and clapping his hands together. "Time for the fireworks show!"
A collective groan went up from the group, half of them laughing, the other half shaking their heads.
"Rafe, man, you sure that's a good idea?" one of his friends asked.
"Good idea? This is a great idea," Rafe said, puffing out his chest as he walked over to the duffel bag.
You grabbed his arm, pulling him back. "Rafe, let's not. You don't even know how to set these things up safely!"
He gave you his best puppy-dog eyes. "Babe, have a little faith in me. I've got this under control."
"You never have anything under control," you muttered under your breath, but he was already rummaging through the bag.
He set up the first firework a little too close to the bonfire for your comfort. You crossed your arms, watching nervously as he fumbled with a lighter.
"Rafe, if you blow us all up, I'm not helping you explain this to your dad," you warned.
"Relax," he said, grinning at you over his shoulder. "I've got this. Trust me."
Famous last words.
The first firework went off without a hitch—a sparkling shower of colors that lit up the night sky. Everyone cheered, and for a moment, you thought maybe, just maybe, he did know what he was doing.
But then Rafe got cocky.
"Let's set off two at once!" he said, grabbing another firework and setting it precariously close to the first.
"Rafe, no!" you shouted, but it was too late. He'd already lit the fuse.
The first one went up beautifully, but the second tipped over at the last second, shooting a stream of sparks directly toward the group.
"RUN!" someone yelled, and chaos erupted as everyone scattered.
You grabbed Rafe's arm and pulled him behind the fire pit, both of you ducking as the rogue firework shot into the ocean with a loud BANG.
When the smoke cleared, you glared at him, breathing heavily. "I told you this was a bad idea!"
Rafe was doubled over with laughter, tears streaming down his face. "Did you see that? That was insane!"
"Insane? You almost killed us!"
He wrapped an arm around your shoulders, still laughing. "Come on, babe, admit it—it was kind of fun."
You smacked his chest playfully. "You're ridiculous."
"And you love it," he said, pulling you in for a quick kiss.
Despite your annoyance, you couldn't help but laugh along with him. Because as chaotic as he was, life with Rafe was never boring—and deep down, you knew you wouldn't have it any other way.
"Next time," you said, leaning your head on his shoulder, "I'm picking the activity."
"Deal," he replied, already grinning like he was planning the next disaster.
