The sun was dipping low over the horizon, casting an orange glow across the Outer Banks. The sound of the ocean waves crashing against the shore was the perfect backdrop to the evening. It was one of those rare nights when everything seemed to fall into place, and for once, you and Rafe were just... enjoying each other's company without the chaos of the world catching up with you.
"Race you to the water!" Rafe suddenly yelled, his eyes sparkling with mischief. Without waiting for a response, he was already sprinting towards the beach, leaving you in a cloud of sand behind him. You laughed and shook your head, immediately taking off after him, your feet sinking into the warm sand.
"You're on, Cameron!" you shouted, your competitive spirit kicking in as you picked up your pace.
The two of you had been together long enough for him to know exactly how to push your buttons—and this was one of those moments. You weren't going to let him get away that easily. You could hear his laugh ahead, confident and cocky as always, but you weren't backing down.
You could see the water ahead of you now, the waves glistening as they rolled toward the shore, and it gave you the extra burst of speed you needed. You weren't going to lose.
Just when you thought you were gaining on him, Rafe glanced over his shoulder, saw you closing the gap, and added a few more strides to his pace, his laugh ringing out even louder.
"Not so fast, love!" he called, just as he reached the water's edge.
You were almost there. Almost. You dug your feet into the sand, pushing yourself harder, but it was too late. Rafe splashed into the waves with a triumphant shout, raising his arms in victory.
"Ha! Told you I'd win," he said, turning to face you with a smug grin.
You slowed to a stop, hands on your hips, pretending to catch your breath. "You might've won this time, but just wait for the next race," you replied, trying to hide your smile. "I'll beat you next time, no problem."
Rafe shook his head, walking back toward you with a grin that could melt anyone's heart. "Keep dreaming, babe."
You stuck out your tongue playfully, watching as he closed the distance between you. As soon as he was close enough, you reached out and splashed him with a handful of water. His eyes widened in mock surprise before he lunged at you, scooping up a bucket of water from the shoreline.
"Oh, it's on now," he said, a glint of mischievous excitement in his eyes.
Before you could react, Rafe was pouring water over your head, laughing as you shrieked, trying to escape. You turned and took off down the beach, but he was quick on your heels, a perfect mix of competitive and carefree. The chase continued, the two of you laughing so hard you barely noticed the sand sticking to your skin or the salty air tangling in your hair.
Eventually, though, you grew tired of running, and with a final, dramatic gasp, you stopped and turned to face him. "Okay, okay, you win," you said, hands up in surrender.
Rafe raised an eyebrow, still grinning. "You sure?"
You nodded, unable to stop yourself from laughing. "Yeah. I'm done. You've had your victory for today."
He walked up to you slowly, his grin softening as he reached out to take your hand. "Well, I suppose I can let you off easy... for now," he teased, pulling you toward him.
You rolled your eyes, but couldn't help the smile that tugged at your lips. Rafe may have won the race, but what you loved most about your relationship was that moments like this—when it was just the two of you being silly and carefree—were what made everything else fade into the background. No drama, no chaos. Just fun.
"You're the worst," you teased, leaning in to kiss him, feeling the warmth of the evening and the coolness of the ocean waves behind you.
"Yeah, but you love me," he said with a wink, his lips brushing against yours.
"Unfortunately," you teased back, but the smile on your face said everything.
The two of you stood there, the salty air swirling around you as the sky above deepened into shades of pink and purple. It was the kind of night that felt endless, where time didn't matter, and nothing else in the world could take away from the simple joy of just being together.
And in that moment, Rafe's carefree spirit and your own laughter made it perfect. You didn't need anything more than this—each other, the beach, and a promise of more days like this ahead.
