The night was still young, the moon hanging high in the sky as the cool summer breeze swept through the Outer Banks. The usual sounds of crickets and distant waves crashing against the shore filled the air. You and Rafe were walking side by side, the soft gravel crunching beneath your feet as you made your way toward the beach. Rafe had that mischievous glint in his eye, the one that made you feel like you were always in for an adventure when he was around.
You had no idea what he was up to this time, but you knew one thing: he was up to something.
"Where are we going?" you asked, narrowing your eyes playfully at him.
"Relax, love. You'll see," Rafe replied with a sly grin, his hand brushing yours as he quickened his pace.
You rolled your eyes, but you couldn't help the smile that tugged at your lips. There was always an element of mystery when it came to Rafe, and it was a mystery you had grown to love. You trusted him—no matter how crazy the plans seemed, he somehow always made them worth it.
You walked together in silence for a few more minutes, the night air cooling your skin. The tension between you two was palpable, but not in the usual way. Tonight, it was different. There was an undeniable excitement in the air, the kind that comes from being with Rafe when you knew something fun was just around the corner.
When you reached the edge of the beach, Rafe suddenly stopped, turning to face you. His grin widened, and he gestured toward the water with a sweeping motion of his hand. "There it is."
Your eyes followed his gesture, but all you saw was the vast expanse of ocean, stretching out into the distance, illuminated by the moonlight. You looked back at him, confused.
"That's it?" you asked, an eyebrow raised. "You brought me all the way here to stare at the water?"
Rafe's grin only grew wider. "Not just any water, love," he said, his voice suddenly serious but still playful. "This is where the fun starts."
Before you could respond, he grabbed your hand and pulled you toward the water. You laughed in surprise, feeling the cool waves lap at your ankles as he led you further into the surf.
"Rafe, what are you doing?" you exclaimed, trying to catch your footing as the waves hit you unexpectedly.
But Rafe wasn't stopping. In fact, he was only speeding up, dragging you with him into the water until the cool waves reached your knees. The moonlight shimmered across the surface of the ocean, casting a surreal glow over the whole scene.
"Come on, love. Don't be a party pooper," Rafe teased, his eyes sparkling with mischief. "We're swimming."
"Swimming?" you repeated, incredulous. "You're out of your mind! It's freezing out here!"
He shot you a playful smirk, his hands tugging at the hem of your shirt. "It's not freezing, it's refreshing. And besides, you're with me. What's the worst that can happen?"
You gave him an exasperated look, but there was no real anger behind it. You couldn't help but laugh at his spontaneity. "You're impossible."
Without another word, Rafe pulled you into the deeper water, his laughter echoing through the air as you tried to keep up. The cool water soaked through your clothes, but you didn't care. In that moment, all that mattered was the ridiculousness of it all—the way Rafe could make everything feel light and carefree.
"Fine, fine!" you shouted over the sound of the waves. "I'm in. But you better not dunk me, Cameron."
Rafe smirked, raising an eyebrow. "Who, me? Dunk you?" He pretended to look innocent, though you could see the mischief in his eyes.
"I swear to god, Rafe," you said, playfully glaring at him. "If you—"
Before you could finish your sentence, Rafe's arms shot out, grabbing you around the waist and spinning you around. The sudden movement caught you off guard, and you yelped in surprise, flailing for balance.
"I warned you," he laughed, his voice full of teasing delight as he tossed you into the water.
You gasped as the cold water splashed over your face, completely drenched now. You came up sputtering, shaking your head in disbelief. "You're crazy!" you shouted, wiping your face.
Rafe's laughter filled the air, carefree and full of life. He wasn't the least bit fazed by the cold water. "That's what you get for doubting me, love."
"You're gonna pay for that, Cameron," you warned, grinning as you stepped closer to him.
"Oh, really?" he challenged, his expression mischievous. "What are you gonna do about it?"
Without giving him time to react, you lunged at him, splashing water in his face. He stumbled back, laughing and trying to shield himself from the onslaught, but you weren't finished.
The two of you fought back and forth, laughing and splashing until the moonlight reflected the joy in your eyes. It was the kind of moment that made you forget about everything else—the world outside, the struggles, the doubts. For once, there was nothing but the sound of Rafe's laughter and the waves crashing around you.
At some point, you both found yourselves just standing there, the cool water up to your knees, grinning at each other like fools. You caught your breath, the salty air making everything feel alive.
"I think we should do this more often," you said, still catching your breath, the water swirling around your feet.
Rafe, still grinning, leaned in closer, his face inches from yours. "You mean get you to laugh until you almost fall over?" he teased. "I'm down."
You rolled your eyes, but you couldn't fight the smile on your face. "You're unbelievable."
"I know," he said, shrugging with exaggerated pride. "But you love me anyway."
"You're lucky I do," you said with a playful smile, reaching up to push his wet hair out of his face.
Rafe's eyes softened for a moment, the teasing glint fading as he stared at you. There was something different in the air, something between the two of you that made the laughter stop for just a second. You stood there, just looking at each other, the world and the chaos of the night fading into the background.
"Yeah," you said, breaking the silence. "I do love you."
His grin returned, softer this time, and he leaned in to kiss you, the taste of saltwater on his lips mixing with something else entirely. As the kiss deepened, the sounds of the world around you seemed to fade away. For a moment, there was nothing but the two of you, and the thrill of being together in that perfect, silly, fun moment.
When you pulled away, breathless and laughing again, Rafe whispered, "You're right. We should definitely do this more often."
"Next time," you said, smirking as you splashed him one last time. "You're getting dunked."
"Bring it on, love," he laughed, already planning his next move.
