You didn't mean to get caught in the rain.
It had started as a sunny afternoon—a rare, peaceful day in the Outer Banks. You and Rafe had decided to take his boat out, just the two of you, leaving behind the chaos of his family and the Pogues. The day had been perfect: light waves, salty air, and the sun warming your skin.
Now, however, the sky was dark, rain pouring down in sheets as the two of you huddled under the boat's canopy.
"You didn't check the weather, did you?" you asked, shivering slightly as the wind whipped through.
Rafe, sitting cross-legged with his hoodie pulled over his head, shot you a guilty grin. "Who checks the weather? That's boring."
"People who don't want to get stuck in the middle of a storm," you retorted, giving him an exasperated look.
He leaned closer, wrapping an arm around your shoulders to pull you into his side. "You're not that mad, though," he said, smirking.
You rolled your eyes but let yourself relax against him. "You're lucky you're cute, Cameron."
"I know," he said, laughing softly. "It's my greatest asset."
You swatted his chest playfully. "That's debatable."
For a moment, the two of you sat in comfortable silence, the sound of the rain hitting the boat filling the air. Rafe reached out, brushing a wet strand of hair from your face.
"You look pretty in the rain," he said suddenly, his voice quieter than before.
You blinked, caught off guard by the sincerity in his tone. "Rafe, I look like a drowned rat."
"No, you don't," he insisted, his thumb lightly tracing your jawline. "You look... happy. Real."
Your cheeks warmed at his words, and you leaned into his touch, looking up at him. "You're such a softie when no one's around," you teased gently.
He chuckled, leaning down to press a kiss to your forehead. "Yeah, well, don't tell anyone. Gotta keep my reputation intact."
You grinned, reaching up to cup his cheek. "Your secret's safe with me."
"Good," he murmured, leaning in to kiss you softly. His lips were warm against yours, a stark contrast to the chilly rain.
When he pulled back, his eyes searched yours, a rare vulnerability in his expression. "I know I mess up a lot," he said quietly. "But I'm really glad I have you."
Your heart swelled at his words, and you rested your forehead against his. "You don't have to be perfect, Rafe. I love you just the way you are."
A small smile tugged at his lips, and he kissed you again, longer this time.
The rain continued to pour, but you barely noticed. In that moment, it was just you and Rafe, the storm around you fading into the background.
Eventually, when the rain began to let up, Rafe stood, pulling you to your feet. "Alright, princess. Let's get out of here before we end up living on this boat."
"Think you could handle being stuck with me that long?" you teased, squeezing the water from your hair.
"Are you kidding?" he said, wrapping an arm around your waist as he guided you back to the wheel. "I'd get stuck with you a million times over."
You smiled, leaning into him as the boat began to glide across the now-calm water. Days with Rafe were never boring, but it was the quiet moments—like this one—that reminded you why you loved him.
