It was one of those rare evenings when the air was still warm, the sun was setting in the sky, and there wasn't a care in the world. You and Rafe had just finished a long day of hanging out with friends, and now it was just the two of you.
Rafe had insisted on taking you somewhere, but as usual, he wasn't giving up any details about the plans.
"Where are we going?" you asked, playfully narrowing your eyes at him as he grinned from ear to ear, driving his car down a winding road with the windows rolled down.
"You'll see," he replied with that signature mischief in his eyes. "Patience."
You huffed in fake frustration, resting your head against the window and staring out at the passing scenery. Despite your protests, you couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement. There was something about Rafe's unpredictability that always kept you on your toes, and tonight was no exception.
After a few more minutes, he pulled into a small, secluded spot near the beach. You couldn't help but grin, realizing where he had taken you. It was one of your favorite spots—the kind of quiet, hidden corner of the world where you could enjoy the beauty of the ocean without anyone else around.
Rafe killed the engine, and you both got out of the car, the soft sound of waves crashing in the distance greeting you. He pulled a blanket from the backseat and spread it out on the sand.
"Okay, now we can relax," he said, flashing you a smile that made your heart race.
You sat down next to him, looking out at the horizon as the sun dipped lower, painting the sky in hues of pink, orange, and purple. It was one of those perfect moments where time seemed to slow down, and everything felt right.
"How did you know this was exactly what I needed?" you asked, leaning your head on his shoulder.
Rafe grinned, wrapping his arm around you. "I know you too well. And besides, this is my kind of thing too."
You laughed softly. "You're not fooling anyone, Rafe. You just like the idea of being mysterious."
"Well, maybe a little," he admitted, squeezing you closer. "But really, I wanted to do something special for you."
You looked up at him, feeling the warmth of his gaze even as the cool ocean breeze swept through the air. "You don't have to do anything special, you know. Just being here with you is enough."
Rafe's eyes softened, and he kissed the top of your head. "I know. But I like making you happy."
As the two of you sat there, sharing quiet conversation, a small box appeared in Rafe's hand. You blinked in surprise as he handed it to you.
"What's this?" you asked, your curiosity piqued.
"Open it," he urged, his grin widening.
You slowly unwrapped the box and gasped when you saw the delicate bracelet inside—silver with tiny charms that represented moments you two had shared together: a small anchor for the boat trip you'd taken, a tiny palm tree from the day you spent at the beach, and a little heart for all the times you had told each other "I love you."
"Rafe, this is beautiful," you said, your voice thick with emotion as you looked up at him.
"I wanted to give you something that reminded you of all the adventures we've had," he said quietly. "And all the ones still to come."
You were speechless for a moment, overwhelmed by the thoughtfulness of the gesture. Without saying anything, you threw your arms around him, pulling him into a tight hug.
"Thank you," you whispered into his ear.
He chuckled softly, his hand stroking your back. "Anything for you."
You pulled back just enough to meet his eyes, a small smile tugging at your lips. "This is the best surprise ever. But I still don't know how you managed to plan all this."
He smirked. "That's a secret."
You shook your head, laughing. "You're impossible."
"I know," he said with a wink, then leaned in to kiss you, soft and sweet, under the fading light of the sunset.
As the sky darkened and the stars began to twinkle above, the two of you lay on the blanket, looking up at the endless expanse of the universe. Rafe's hand never left yours, and as you drifted into a peaceful silence, you felt like you were exactly where you were meant to be—by his side.
