You had always been a little shy, especially around Rafe. While your friends thrived in the limelight, you preferred the comfort of the shadows, quietly cheering them on from a distance. But Rafe, with his confident charm and warm smile, seemed to notice you even in a crowded room.
It was a lazy afternoon, and the sun hung low in the sky, casting a golden glow over the chateau. You and Rafe had decided to spend some time together, just the two of you. The Pogues were off doing their own thing, leaving you both to enjoy the serenity.
Rafe sat beside you on the steps, his arm draped casually over your shoulder. You could feel the warmth radiating from him, and it made your heart race. He was talking about something funny that had happened with the guys, his laughter echoing in the quiet space. You couldn't help but smile at his enthusiasm, but words felt stuck in your throat.
"You know, you can talk to me about anything, right?" Rafe said, turning to face you, his expression sincere.
You nodded, feeling a rush of affection for him. He always made you feel safe, but opening up was still a challenge for you. "Yeah, I know," you replied, your voice barely above a whisper.
Rafe tilted his head, studying your face. "You're so quiet sometimes. I just want to make sure you're okay."
The concern in his eyes made your heart swell. "I am," you assured him, hoping to convey just how much you appreciated his understanding. "I just... I guess I'm not as good at talking as you are."
He chuckled softly, nudging you playfully. "I think that's okay. I can talk enough for both of us." He grinned, and you couldn't help but laugh, the sound light and freeing.
"I like listening to you," you admitted, your shyness slowly melting away in the warmth of his presence.
Rafe leaned closer, his voice dropping to a softer tone. "Well, I like having you listen. It's nice knowing you're always there, even when you're quiet."
The sincerity of his words wrapped around you like a comforting blanket. You looked into his eyes, feeling a connection that made your shyness fade away. "You really mean that?"
"Of course," he said, brushing a strand of hair behind your ear. "You're important to me, even if you don't always say a lot."
In that moment, you felt a rush of courage. "I... I really like you, Rafe. A lot." The words slipped out before you could second-guess yourself.
His face lit up with a smile, and he took your hand, intertwining his fingers with yours. "I like you too. More than I can say."
You felt a warmth spread through you, your shyness replaced with a blossoming confidence. It was okay to be quiet, you realized. Rafe loved you just as you were, and that was enough.
"Let's just enjoy this moment," he said, leaning back against the steps, pulling you closer. "No pressure to talk. Just us."
You nodded, resting your head against his shoulder, content in the quiet companionship. In the safety of his embrace, you felt like you could finally be yourself.
As the sun dipped lower, casting a soft glow around you, you knew that even in silence, there was a special kind of beauty. With Rafe by your side, you felt brave enough to face anything, even your shyness.
