The clock ticked past midnight as you and Rafe lay on the rooftop of Tannyhill, wrapped in a blanket under the stars. The summer breeze was gentle, and the world seemed quiet, just the two of you under the vast sky, talking about everything and nothing.
You felt Rafe's arm around you, pulling you closer to him, his warmth mixing with the cool night air. His usual tough-guy demeanor was gone, replaced by a relaxed version of himself—one that you rarely saw but loved when it came out.
"You ever think about the future?" you asked softly, your eyes on the stars, but your mind focused on the boy next to you.
Rafe turned his head slightly to look at you, a curious smile on his lips. "Sometimes," he replied, his voice low, almost thoughtful. "Why? You thinking about it right now?"
You shrugged, but there was a smile playing on your lips too. "Maybe. I don't know, it just feels like everything's kind of changing lately. Like, things are different."
Rafe nodded, his fingers absentmindedly tracing circles on your shoulder. "Yeah, I get that."
You turned your head to face him, and there was a softness in his eyes that you hadn't expected. "Do you think... we'll still be like this in the future?"
Rafe's gaze softened even more, and he shifted, propping himself up on his elbow so he could look at you better. "Like this?"
"Yeah, you know... us."
He didn't answer right away, but his eyes never left yours. Instead, he leaned down and kissed your forehead, his lips lingering there for a moment before he pulled back slightly.
"I think we're gonna be better," he said quietly. "Because being with you is the only thing that makes sense to me. No matter what happens, I want you with me."
Your heart fluttered at his words. It wasn't often that Rafe got like this—honest, vulnerable. But when he did, it made moments like these feel even more special.
"You mean that?" you asked, your voice barely a whisper.
Rafe nodded, his hand moving to cup your cheek. "Yeah, I do. You keep me grounded. When I'm with you, everything feels... right."
You couldn't help but smile, your chest tightening in the best way possible. Without saying anything else, you closed the space between you and kissed him. It was soft and slow, filled with all the unspoken words between you.
When you pulled back, Rafe rested his forehead against yours, his thumb gently brushing your cheek. "You make me want to be better," he murmured.
"You already are," you whispered back, your fingers gently running through his hair. "You're enough, Rafe."
A small smile tugged at his lips, and he kissed you again, this time deeper, like he was trying to show you just how much you meant to him.
And as the night stretched on, with the stars twinkling above and the world quiet around you, it felt like nothing else mattered but the two of you—wrapped in each other's arms, dreaming of a future where you'd always be together.
