A/N: The song is above. The song is In Between by Gracie Abrams
The night had a stillness to it, the kind of quiet that invited vulnerability. You sat cross-legged on the bed, your glasses perched on the bridge of your nose, flipping aimlessly through a book you hadn't touched in weeks. The warm glow of the bedside lamp cast soft shadows across the room, but the real light came from the boy lying beside you.
Rafe was stretched out on his back, one arm tucked behind his head, the other draped lazily across his chest. He wasn't looking at the TV playing softly in the background or the book in your hands. His attention was entirely on you.
"You know," he started, his voice breaking the silence, "those glasses make you look ridiculously cute."
You glanced up, rolling your eyes even though a small smile tugged at the corners of your lips. "Oh, really? Didn't know you had a thing for nerds, Cameron."
He let out a laugh, low and easy, the kind that made your chest feel warm. "Not just any nerd. My nerd."
"Oh, God," you groaned playfully, dropping the book onto your lap. "You're impossible."
"And you love it," he shot back confidently, his grin widening.
You nudged him with your foot, but your smile betrayed you. Rafe always had a way of getting under your skin, in the best possible way. It was in the way he teased you, the way he looked at you like you were the only person in the room.
"What are you staring at?" you asked, narrowing your eyes at him as his gaze lingered.
"Your smile," he said, unashamed. "And those eyes." He laughed softly to himself, shaking his head. "I swear, you have no idea how pretty you are, do you?"
The air shifted, his words sinking into the quiet. Heat rushed to your cheeks as you looked down, suddenly very aware of how close he was. "Rafe—"
"No, seriously," he interrupted, sitting up slightly to face you. "You're beautiful. And funny. And smart—smarter than anyone I've ever met." His voice dropped to that intimate, late-night tone he only used when it was just the two of you. "You're like nothing I've ever seen."
Your breath caught, his words piercing through the insecurities you rarely voiced. He always did this—found the cracks in your armor and filled them with warmth and reassurance.
"I don't know what I did to deserve you," you murmured, your fingers brushing against his.
His hand found yours, his thumb tracing slow circles over your knuckles. "You don't have to do anything. Just... be you."
The weight of his words hung between you, heavy with sincerity. It wasn't just that he said them—it was the way he said them, like they were indisputable truths.
"Sometimes I think I want this too much," you admitted, your voice barely audible.
His brows furrowed slightly, his hand tightening around yours. "What do you mean?"
"This. Us. You." You gestured vaguely between the two of you. "It just feels... perfect."
His lips quirked into a soft smile, his eyes never leaving yours. "Good," he said simply, his voice warm and steady. "Because I'm not going anywhere. You're stuck with me, love."
The way he said "love" made your heart ache in the best way, like it was a promise he'd never break. You leaned into him, letting the moment wrap around you. The world outside could disappear, and you wouldn't care, as long as you had this.
Rafe tilted his head, his eyes scanning your face like he was memorizing every detail. "You know I mean it, right?"
You nodded, your throat tight with emotion. "Yeah. I do."
The corners of his mouth lifted into a smile, and he shifted closer, his voice filling the quiet of the room as he started talking—about anything and everything. His words spilled out in that way he did late at night, when the world felt smaller and safer.
And you loved it. You loved the way he spoke, the way he unraveled his thoughts just for you. You loved the way he made you feel seen, like you weren't just another person in his life but the most important one.
You listened, your head resting on his shoulder, his voice washing over you like a lullaby. And as he continued to talk about nothing and everything all at once, you realized something.
It wasn't just the big moments that made you love him—it was everything in between.
