Rafe Cameron's life was anything but ordinary. He was the guy who always had a temper, who faced every challenge with a hard edge, and who rarely ever smiled unless it was sarcastic or laced with mischief. But then there was you—his girlfriend. The one person who could turn his world upside down in the best way possible. You were carefree, goofy, and full of energy, and you had a way of making him laugh that no one else ever could.
It was a lazy Saturday afternoon, and Rafe found himself on the couch, staring at the ceiling. He was supposed to be doing something productive, maybe helping out with family business or sorting through his usual mess, but the pull of the weekend had made him restless. You had other plans though—plans that involved him whether he liked it or not.
"Rafe!" you called, your voice carrying down the hallway. You appeared in the doorway, a mischievous grin plastered across your face. "Get up. We're going out."
Rafe didn't even move, keeping his gaze fixed on the ceiling. "I'm comfortable."
"Oh, come on! You're just going to lie there all day?" You crossed your arms over your chest, leaning against the doorframe. "You promised me ice cream today. We're not going to let it melt, are we?"
Rafe let out a dramatic groan but couldn't hide the smile that tugged at his lips. He'd never been one to turn down an ice cream run, especially when it involved you. You always managed to convince him to go along with whatever idea you had, and he found himself letting you win more often than he'd care to admit.
"You're relentless," he muttered, sitting up and rubbing his eyes. "Fine, fine, let's go get your damn ice cream. But only because you look so damn cute when you pout."
You lit up at his words, your pout turning into a full-on grin. "Yay! I knew you'd come through! I'll be waiting in the car!"
As you rushed out of the room, Rafe shook his head with a chuckle. You were far too energetic for him at times, but he wouldn't have it any other way. He stood up and grabbed his jacket, following you outside.
The drive to the ice cream shop was filled with your usual banter. You hummed along to the radio, tapping your fingers on the dashboard, and occasionally throwing glances at Rafe. He, on the other hand, was lost in thought, but every now and then he caught your wide, excited eyes and couldn't help but smile.
When you arrived, you immediately jumped out of the car, practically skipping toward the entrance. "Come on, slowpoke! The sooner we get in, the sooner we can eat!"
Rafe rolled his eyes but followed you inside, laughing as you went straight to the counter, scanning the ice cream flavors like a child in a candy store. He had to admit, he was starting to look forward to whatever combination you'd choose this time. You always managed to pick the most bizarre yet somehow delicious combos.
"I'm thinking chocolate chip cookie dough with strawberry swirl," you declared, looking over your shoulder to make sure Rafe was paying attention. "What about you?"
Rafe shrugged, not really caring all that much about what flavor he picked. "I'll go with whatever. You pick for me."
You raised an eyebrow and grinned. "You're lucky I'm in a good mood." You pointed at the chocolate hazelnut, the one flavor he had never tried before. "That one. Trust me."
Rafe hesitated for a moment, then shrugged. "Alright, alright. I'll try it."
You skipped back to the counter, and the two of you placed your orders. As the server scooped the ice cream into cups, you leaned against the counter, playfully bumping into Rafe's side.
"Race ya to the table!" you exclaimed before bolting toward the seating area.
Rafe shook his head with a smile, a sense of fondness overwhelming him. You were always like this—running, laughing, finding joy in the simplest things. It was like you had this endless well of energy, and you brought it out of him in a way he hadn't even realized he needed.
By the time he got to the table, you were already sitting, your ice cream in front of you, eagerly digging in. "See? I'm the fastest!"
He sat down across from you, taking a spoonful of his own ice cream. "You're impossible, you know that?"
You grinned widely, holding up your spoon in a mock salute. "Yep, and you love it."
Rafe rolled his eyes, but his smile told you everything you needed to know. "Can't argue with that."
You both dug into your ice cream, but it wasn't long before you were laughing at something ridiculous, like the way you'd accidentally gotten ice cream on your nose or how you'd dared each other to do the worst impressions of the other. The laughter between you two felt like music—something easy and natural, filling the space around you with warmth.
"Hey, Rafe," you said suddenly, your face serious for a moment. "Do you ever just... feel like everything's okay, even if things are a mess?"
Rafe looked at you, a bit surprised by the depth of your question, but then he saw the glint in your eyes, the innocence mixed with a quiet wisdom that only you possessed. He let out a deep breath and leaned back in his seat, glancing out the window for a moment.
"Yeah," he said, a soft smile tugging at the corners of his lips. "I feel that way when I'm with you."
Your eyes softened, and without warning, you leaned across the table and kissed him. It was quick, simple, but full of the unspoken connection that had built between you two over time.
"You're such a sap, Rafe," you teased, pulling away with a smirk.
He chuckled, shaking his head. "Only for you."
The rest of the afternoon passed in a blur of laughter, silly challenges, and playful teasing. Rafe had never been the kind of guy who sought out simple joy, but with you, it was hard not to.
As the sun began to set, you two walked back to the car, your hands intertwined. It was a small moment, but one that Rafe would remember. There was something about you—your energy, your laughter, the way you brought out his lighter side—that made everything seem right in the world.
And for the first time in a long time, he realized that maybe, just maybe, you were the one thing in his life that was perfectly, wonderfully uncomplicated.
