A/N: I don't really like this one but it's whatever because I need to post on here and I haven't in a while so here's a little something while I write something better. Also, PLEASE check out my new book "The Girl in the Hoodie." I'll mainly be posting there now for a bit but I'll come here ever so often to post something.
It had been a week since you and Rafe had last spoken, and the silence between you both felt heavy. You could feel the weight of unspoken words pressing down on your chest every time you thought about him. The tension had built up—small arguments here and there, misunderstandings, and unhealed wounds that had created a space between you two that wasn't easy to cross.
But today, it was different.
You stood at the edge of the pier, gazing out at the horizon. The sky was painted in hues of orange and purple as the sun began to set. The soft sound of the waves crashing against the rocks beneath the pier was the only noise breaking the quiet. You needed space, but at the same time, you felt the pull of him. You always did.
Suddenly, you heard footsteps behind you. Familiar ones, ones that sent a wave of emotions crashing over you. Without turning around, you knew it was Rafe.
"Hey," he said softly, his voice raw, as if he hadn't used it in a while.
Your heart skipped a beat, but you didn't move, not yet. The vulnerability in his tone caught you off guard. You could feel his presence, the way it seemed to fill the space between you without him even touching you.
"I know you're mad," he continued, and you could tell he was holding back more words, more emotion than he was used to showing. "I know I screwed up. But can we talk? Really talk?"
Your eyes remained focused on the ocean. You didn't want to seem too eager, didn't want him to think you were waiting for him to fix everything. You wanted him to mean it.
"Why now?" You turned to face him slowly, arms crossed as a barrier. His eyes met yours, full of regret but also a kind of longing that made your stomach flip.
"Because I can't stand this anymore," he admitted. "I've spent the last few days thinking about what I did and how I've treated you, and I don't want to lose you. I don't want us to end like this."
For a moment, all you could do was stare at him, taking in the boy you knew so well—the one who had always been full of confidence, who never backed down. But now, there was a rawness to him. A honesty that made you wonder if this was the real Rafe Cameron, the one that only came out when he let his walls fall.
"I don't want to lose you either," you finally said, your voice soft but steady. "But we can't keep pretending like everything's fine when it's not. I'm not just going to act like nothing happened."
Rafe stepped closer, the distance between you closing with each slow step. "I know. And I'm sorry. I don't expect you to forgive me right away. Hell, I don't even deserve it."
He stood in front of you now, so close you could feel his warmth, his breath mingling with yours. You hesitated, torn between the love you felt for him and the pain he had caused.
"I'm scared," you confessed, your voice barely above a whisper. "I'm scared of how easily we fall into this pattern. How I let you get under my skin and then... I get hurt."
Rafe reached for your hand, gently, as though testing the waters. "I'm scared too. But we can fight through this, together. I know I've been a mess, but I want to make it right. I want to prove it to you."
Your chest tightened at his words, but you didn't pull away. Slowly, you allowed yourself to soften, just enough to meet him halfway. You didn't have all the answers, but you knew that this moment was important. If you wanted things to work between you two, it had to start with this conversation—this raw honesty that both of you had been avoiding for too long.
"Why do we always end up here?" you asked, a sad smile tugging at the corners of your lips. "In these moments where everything feels so right, but then we find a way to mess it up?"
Rafe let out a quiet laugh, brushing a lock of your hair behind your ear. "I don't know, but maybe it's because when we're together, everything else feels so wrong that it's hard to figure out how to fix it. I'm not perfect, and I know I've made mistakes, but I swear to God, I'm trying."
You nodded, your heart thumping in your chest. It wasn't easy to let your guard down, but you were starting to realize that maybe this was worth fighting for.
"I don't want to keep fighting you, Rafe," you said, voice trembling slightly. "But I can't keep pretending either. We need to find a way to make this work. To stop hurting each other."
Rafe's expression softened, and he pulled you into his arms, holding you tightly. You didn't resist, letting yourself melt into the embrace, feeling the steady beat of his heart against your cheek.
"I don't want to hurt you anymore," he murmured into your hair. "I'll do whatever it takes. I promise."
And as you stood there in his arms, the sound of the ocean in the background, you felt a sense of peace settle over you, knowing that the two of you were willing to try again. Together.
