The night air was thick with humidity, the scent of salt and pine mixing together as the two of you lay tangled up in the bed of Rafe's truck. The sky stretched above you, endless and full of stars, the only sound the rhythmic crash of the waves in the distance.
Rafe's arms were firm around you, his hands tracing lazy patterns against the exposed skin of your back. His warmth, his presence—it was the only thing keeping you grounded tonight. You had been quiet on the drive out here, and Rafe had noticed immediately. He always noticed.
"Alright, princess," he murmured, his voice low but steady. "Talk to me. What's wrong?"
You sighed, pressing your face against his chest, inhaling the familiar scent of his cologne mixed with salt air and the lingering smell of cigarettes. "Nothing," you mumbled, but even you didn't believe it.
Rafe chuckled softly, his fingers dipping under the hem of your hoodie, just barely skimming the skin of your waist. "Yeah? That's funny, 'cause you've been quiet since I picked you up. And you never shut up, baby."
You rolled your eyes, but there was no real annoyance behind it. "I just... I don't know, Rafe. Today sucked, okay? I felt like everything I did was wrong. Like nothing I do is enough."
He was silent for a moment, and then, with no hesitation, he flipped the two of you over, pressing you back against the blankets he had laid out in the truck bed. His arms caged you in, but it wasn't suffocating—it was safe, warm.
"You listen to me right now," Rafe said, voice rough with certainty. His eyes, so sharp and blue in the dim light, locked onto yours. "You're more than enough. You hear me? I don't give a damn what anyone else says. I don't care what today felt like. You're mine. And you are more than enough."
Your throat tightened at the sheer conviction in his words. "But—"
"Nope," he cut you off, shaking his head. "Not doing this. You wanna talk? Then talk, baby. Get it all out. But don't you dare sit here and tell me you're not enough, because I'll fight you on that all damn night."
You exhaled shakily, closing your eyes for a second before opening them again. "I just feel like I'm always messing up. Like I'm trying so damn hard, and it doesn't matter. I can't win."
Rafe let out a slow breath, then leaned down, pressing his forehead to yours. "Even when the sky comes falling," he murmured, so soft it was almost a whisper.
Your lips quirked up slightly. "Even when the sun don't shine," you finished, barely above a breath.
Rafe smirked, brushing the tip of his nose against yours. "There she is. My girl." His voice was warm, teasing, but there was something deeper beneath it. Something real.
You reached up, fingers threading through the short hairs at the nape of his neck. "Are you seriously quoting Miguel to me right now?"
"Hell yeah, I am," Rafe grinned. "But only 'cause it's true. I got faith in you and I, baby. Always."
Your heart clenched at the raw honesty in his voice. "Do you really mean that?"
He frowned, like the very idea of you doubting it physically hurt him. "What the fuck? Of course, I mean it. Put your pretty little hand in mine." He grabbed your hand, lifting it up between you, pressing his lips to your knuckles. "We're in this together, alright?"
You exhaled a shaky breath, nodding. "Alright."
Rafe's gaze softened, his fingers tangling with yours. "Even when we're down to the wire, babe. Even when we do or die."
You swallowed thickly. "We can do it, baby. Simple and plain."
A slow, satisfied smirk spread across his lips. "Damn right we can."
For a moment, the two of you just laid there, wrapped up in each other, letting the night air surround you. His hands never stopped moving, always grounding, always reassuring. His thumb rubbed slow circles against your wrist, his other hand tracing your spine in long, languid strokes.
"Rafe?"
"Yeah, baby?"
You hesitated for a second before whispering, "I love you."
His body tensed for just a fraction of a second before he exhaled, pressing a slow, lingering kiss against your forehead. "I love you more, pretty girl." His lips ghosted down to your cheek, then to the corner of your mouth, his breath warm against your skin. "And this? Us?"
You looked up at him, heart thundering. "It's a sure thing."
His smile widened, his grip on you tightening as he pulled you even closer, until there was no space left between you. "Damn right it is."
And for the first time all day, you believed it.
