It wasn't often that you got Rafe away from the chaos of the Outer Banks, but today, you had managed to pull him away for something simple—a picnic just for the two of you. The weather was perfect, with the sun shining but not too hot, and a gentle breeze blowing across the open field where you had set up your blanket. Rafe had reluctantly agreed to go, but now that you were here, you could see the tension leaving his shoulders.
"You really thought of everything," Rafe said, eyeing the spread of food you'd packed with a soft smile.
You beamed, sitting down next to him. "Told you it'd be worth it."
He chuckled, popping a grape into his mouth and lying back on the blanket, looking up at the clear blue sky. "It's nice... getting away like this."
You lay down beside him, resting your head on his chest. "I knew you needed a break," you whispered, tracing light circles on his arm.
Rafe wrapped his arm around you, pulling you closer. "I guess you know me better than I know myself."
You smiled, feeling his heartbeat steady beneath you. "I just want to take care of you."
For a moment, there was silence, just the sound of birds chirping and the wind rustling the leaves in the trees. You could feel Rafe relaxing, his usual rough edges softening as he let go of the weight he carried. He wasn't the Rafe that the world saw—the one who had to always be tough, always be in control. Here, with you, he was just... Rafe. The boy who loved you more than anything.
"Thank you," he murmured, his voice barely above a whisper.
You looked up at him, surprised by the sudden seriousness in his tone. "For what?"
Rafe shifted slightly, meeting your eyes. "For putting up with me. For always being here. I know I'm not always the easiest guy to be around."
You shook your head, smiling softly. "You don't have to thank me for that. I love you, Rafe. And I'm not going anywhere."
His eyes softened at your words, and for a moment, you saw a flicker of something vulnerable in his gaze. He leaned down, pressing a gentle kiss to your lips, and you melted into him, the world around you fading away.
"I don't know what I'd do without you," he whispered when he pulled away.
You smiled, brushing a strand of hair from his forehead. "You won't have to find out."
The two of you stayed like that for a while, wrapped up in each other, as the sun began to dip lower in the sky. It was moments like this that reminded you of why you loved him so much—because beneath all the bravado and the chaos, Rafe Cameron was just a boy who wanted to be loved. And you were more than happy to be the one to give him that.
