It was one of those rare moments when the Outer Banks was quiet, the sky painted in soft pinks and purples as the sun set behind the horizon. Most people would be getting ready for the evening, but you and Rafe had decided to escape it all. You had snuck away to one of his favorite spots—an old, forgotten lookout point where the only sounds were the wind in the trees and the distant crash of waves against the shore.
You sat on the hood of Rafe's truck, legs swinging lazily, while he leaned against the truck, arms crossed, watching you. There was something almost peaceful about him in this moment, as if the weight of the world hadn't yet crushed him under its endless pressure.
"Hey," you said, glancing up at him with a playful grin. "I bet you can't guess what I'm thinking right now."
Rafe raised an eyebrow, a smirk already playing at his lips. "Oh really? I'm dying to know."
You narrowed your eyes at him, making a show of pretending to think hard. "Well, I was thinking about how amazing it would be if we just stayed here forever. No plans, no responsibilities—just the two of us."
He chuckled softly, pushing himself off the truck to stand next to you. "That sounds pretty damn perfect, actually."
"I mean it," you said, swinging your legs and kicking them playfully. "We could just leave it all behind. Forget about the chaos for one night. Just me and you, in our own little world."
For a moment, Rafe's expression faltered. It was rare that he ever let himself dream, but you could see the temptation in his eyes. His life had always been a whirlwind, filled with people telling him what to do, how to act, what was expected of him. But here, with you, things felt different. Like maybe there was a chance for something simpler, something he could have if he let himself.
He reached out, his fingers brushing against your knee, sending a spark of warmth through you. "You really think we could just run away from it all?" he asked softly, as if testing the waters.
You nodded, looking up at him with a sense of certainty. "Why not? All we need is each other."
Rafe took a step closer, the air between you charged with an unspoken connection. His usual cocky demeanor had softened, replaced with something more vulnerable. "I don't know if I've ever had anything that could be mine. That I could keep."
"You have me," you said, your voice firm and confident. "And you'll always have me, Rafe. No matter what happens."
He hesitated for a moment before speaking again, his voice low, almost hesitant. "I'm not exactly easy to be with, you know that, right?"
You smiled softly, your thumb tracing a gentle pattern over the back of his hand. "I know. But I don't mind. You're worth it."
For the first time in a long time, Rafe let out a deep sigh, not out of frustration but out of something else. He ran his hand through his hair, a small laugh escaping him. "You really are something else."
You grinned, leaning in slightly. "I'm serious though, Rafe. We don't have to fix everything right now. We don't have to know what's next. We just need tonight. This moment."
He looked down at you, his eyes softening, and for a brief second, you saw the man beneath the layers of defense he'd built up over the years. He wasn't just the reckless, wild Cameron kid everyone knew. He was someone who, for the first time, was letting himself believe in something simpler. Something good.
"You make me believe in things I didn't think I could," Rafe admitted, his voice barely above a whisper.
You tilted your head, smiling up at him. "And what's that?"
"That maybe... maybe things could actually be okay. Maybe I could be okay," he said, his hand coming up to brush your cheek gently. His touch was tender, the weight of his words making you feel something deep in your chest.
"You are okay," you whispered, your heart swelling as you looked up at him. "You just need someone to remind you."
For a moment, Rafe didn't say anything. He didn't need to. Instead, he leaned down and kissed you softly, his lips pressing against yours with the kind of passion that only came when there was no need for words. It was a kiss full of promise, of hope, of something new. Something real.
When he pulled back, he kept his forehead against yours, breathing you in like he was afraid you might disappear. "Maybe we can make this work. Just us. No one else. No chaos."
You nodded, your arms wrapping around him as you pulled him close. "I'm in. I'll always be in. For you."
Rafe held you a little tighter, his grip reassuring as the wind continued to whip around you both. It was in these moments that everything else faded away. The world, with all its chaos and complications, didn't matter. What mattered was the connection you shared, the bond you were building together.
And for the first time in a long time, Rafe felt like maybe—just maybe—he had found something worth fighting for.
