It was one of those nights where the air felt electric with possibility, and the moon hung high, casting its pale light across the quiet streets of the Outer Banks. You and Rafe had been hanging out at the chateau for hours, laughing, joking, and generally making a mess of everything around you. You were sprawled on the couch, feet tucked under a blanket, your phone in your hand as you mindlessly scrolled through social media.
Rafe was pacing in front of you, hands stuffed into his pockets, that familiar mischievous glint in his eyes. You raised an eyebrow, glancing up from your phone. You'd learned by now that when Rafe started pacing like that, it meant he was planning something.
"What are you up to now?" you asked, eyeing him suspiciously.
Rafe's grin widened. "Oh, nothing much," he said, all innocence, but the look on his face told a different story. "Just wondering if you're up for a little adventure."
You set your phone down, crossing your arms over your chest. "What kind of adventure?"
He stopped pacing and leaned against the wall, giving you a dramatic look. "The kind where we might just make the night a little more... interesting."
You groaned, though a smile tugged at your lips. "You're impossible. What are you planning, Rafe?"
He straightened up, eyes twinkling with excitement. "Okay, hear me out," he began, his tone dropping into a mock-seriousness. "What if we—just you and me—sneak out in the middle of the night and cause some chaos around town?"
You laughed, a sound that was part amusement, part disbelief. "You've gotta be kidding me."
"I'm not." His grin spread, and you could tell that once Rafe had an idea in his head, there was no stopping him. "Think about it. No one will be around. We'll have the place to ourselves. We can run wild, be a little reckless. What do you say?"
You considered it for a moment, the adrenaline starting to build in your chest. You'd been with Rafe long enough to know that when he got like this, anything was possible. You'd also learned that saying no to Rafe was usually a terrible idea.
"Alright, fine," you said with a smirk, standing up from the couch. "But you better not get me arrested."
Rafe's face lit up with triumph. "Deal."
You and Rafe slipped out of the house, the cool night air hitting your skin as you made your way down the quiet street. You could feel the rush of excitement already building. There was something exhilarating about sneaking around with Rafe, breaking the rules just a little.
"So, what's the plan?" you asked, glancing at him as you both walked quickly, trying to keep quiet.
Rafe's grin was like that of a kid on Christmas morning. "We're going to the ice cream shop."
You blinked. "The ice cream shop?"
"Yeah," he said, as though it was the most obvious thing in the world. "I've got a feeling they leave the door unlocked after hours. We're gonna grab as much ice cream as we can carry."
Your eyebrows shot up. "Are you serious?"
He shrugged, trying to look casual. "What's the worst that could happen? Ice cream is basically a crime-free zone."
You couldn't help but laugh at how ridiculous this whole thing was. "Okay, I'm in. But if we get caught, I'm blaming you."
Rafe held up his hands in mock surrender. "Fair enough."
The two of you arrived at the ice cream shop just a few minutes later. Rafe expertly checked the back door, and when it opened with a small creak, he shot you a look of triumph.
"See? Easy," he said, winking at you as you both snuck inside.
The shop was dark, the only light coming from the glow of the freezer cases. The air smelled like vanilla and chocolate, and the sight of all that ice cream made your mouth water instantly.
"Alright, what's your flavor?" Rafe asked, walking over to one of the freezers and peering inside.
You approached cautiously, looking over the options. "I don't know... there are too many choices." You leaned down, trying to decide. "How about mint chocolate chip?"
Rafe raised an eyebrow. "Really? You're going that basic?"
You shot him a playful glare. "What's wrong with mint chocolate chip?"
He shrugged, grinning. "Nothing, if you're a boring person."
"Excuse me?" you gasped, hands on your hips. "I'm not boring. You just don't appreciate the classics."
He scoffed dramatically, before grabbing a tub of cookie dough ice cream and holding it up like a trophy. "This," he said, his voice full of reverence, "is the superior flavor."
You rolled your eyes but couldn't suppress your laughter. "Okay, fine. You can have your cookie dough. I'll stick with my mint chocolate chip."
It didn't take long for the two of you to load up on ice cream, both of you giggling like children as you piled the tubs into your arms. But as you were about to leave, you heard the unmistakable sound of footsteps approaching.
You froze, eyes wide. "Rafe, we've gotta go, now."
Rafe barely looked phased, glancing around the room before grabbing your hand. "Follow my lead."
He yanked you toward the back door, and the two of you darted out into the alley behind the shop. You both ran down the street, ice cream in hand, laughing uncontrollably as you turned corners and tried to put as much distance between you and the shop as possible.
"You're insane," you said, still laughing, out of breath.
"I know," Rafe replied, glancing over at you with a grin. "But you love me."
"I do," you said, shaking your head with a smile. "You make life way too fun."
By the time you both made it back to the chateau, the ice cream was halfway gone, and the adrenaline from the heist was still coursing through your veins. You were both sticky and cold, but in that moment, you couldn't remember the last time you'd had so much fun.
Rafe threw himself onto the couch dramatically, tossing his half-eaten ice cream on the table. "That," he said, grinning up at the ceiling, "was the best idea I've had all week."
You laughed, plopping down next to him. "It was pretty great. But next time, I get to pick the crime."
Rafe looked over at you, a mischievous glint in his eye. "Oh, I'm scared. You've got some wild plans, don't you?"
You winked at him. "You have no idea."
And with that, the two of you leaned back, enjoying the spoils of your midnight adventure. It wasn't just about the ice cream or the sneaky getaway. It was about the moments like these—being with Rafe, breaking the rules, and laughing until you couldn't breathe. And in that moment, you knew that with him by your side, life was always going to be a little more fun.
