Rafe always teased you about how childish you could be, but deep down, you knew he secretly loved it. He'd roll his eyes whenever you clung to his arm like a koala or pouted dramatically when things didn't go your way. Still, the soft smile tugging at the corner of his lips always gave him away.
Today was no different. You were in the middle of the small farmers' market near the waterfront, and your attention had been completely stolen by a vendor selling fresh sunflowers.
"Rafe!" you gasped, tugging on his arm like an excited kid. "Look at those! Aren't they so pretty?"
"They're flowers, baby," Rafe replied, trying to sound unimpressed, but his amused grin betrayed him.
"They're not just flowers," you argued, your eyes wide as you stared at the vibrant yellow blooms. "They're happy flowers. We need them for the house."
Rafe raised a brow. "We need them?"
"Yes, Rafe!" you huffed, stomping your foot lightly for emphasis. "They'll make everything brighter. Don't you want to be happy?"
He chuckled, sliding his hands into his pockets. "I already am. You're my little sunshine, aren't you?"
You paused, momentarily distracted by his words, a blush creeping up your cheeks. But you weren't about to let him off the hook that easily.
"Flattery won't work this time," you said, crossing your arms. "I'm getting those flowers."
Rafe tilted his head, his grin widening. "Oh, really? With what money?"
You blinked, caught off guard. "Uh... yours?"
"Yeah, no," he laughed, shaking his head. "I'm not buying overpriced flowers when you'll forget about them in two days."
You gasped, clutching your chest dramatically. "Forget about them? Rafe Cameron, how dare you underestimate my love for sunflowers!"
"Easy," he teased, leaning down to press a quick kiss to your forehead. "You're adorable, but no. Let's go get something to eat instead."
You narrowed your eyes at him, your lips twitching as you tried to suppress a smile. "Fine. But this isn't over."
An hour later, you found yourself back at the market—alone.
Rafe had stepped away to take a call, leaving you with strict instructions to stay put at the café. Naturally, you ignored him. It wasn't like you were doing anything reckless; you just couldn't stop thinking about those sunflowers.
You strolled back to the vendor, pulling out the small stash of cash you kept hidden in your phone case. The elderly woman running the booth beamed at you as she wrapped the bouquet in kraft paper.
"These are for someone special?" she asked.
You grinned. "For me. But don't tell my boyfriend; he wouldn't let me buy them."
The woman chuckled, handing you the flowers. "Your secret's safe with me, sweetheart."
Feeling triumphant, you made your way back to the café, the sunflowers clutched tightly in your arms.
When you walked in, Rafe was already there, leaning against the counter with his phone in hand. His eyes flicked up to meet yours, and the sight of you with the flowers made him pause.
"Seriously?" he said, raising a brow.
"What?" you asked innocently, holding the bouquet closer. "They're mine. I bought them."
"With what money?"
"My own," you said, sticking your tongue out at him. "See? I'm independent."
Rafe shook his head, a mixture of disbelief and fondness on his face. "You're something else, you know that?"
"I know," you said with a cheeky grin, walking over to him. "But don't they make you happy?"
He looked at the flowers, then at you. "Nope."
You pouted, your lower lip jutting out in that way you knew he couldn't resist.
Rafe sighed, a small smile creeping onto his face. "Okay, fine. Maybe a little. But only because you look ridiculous carrying them around like that."
You gasped, swatting his arm with the bouquet. "You're mean!"
"And you're a brat," he shot back, wrapping an arm around your waist to pull you close. "But you're my brat. Let's go home."
By the time you got back to the house, the sunflowers were already starting to droop slightly, but you didn't care. You stuck them in a glass of water, setting them on the kitchen table with a proud smile.
Rafe watched from the doorway, shaking his head as he leaned against the frame. "You're such a kid, you know that?"
"Yeah," you said, turning to face him. "But you love it."
"I do," he admitted, walking over and wrapping his arms around you. "Even if you drive me insane half the time."
You grinned, standing on your tiptoes to kiss him. "Good. I wouldn't want you to get bored."
Rafe chuckled, resting his forehead against yours. "Bored? Not a chance, baby. You're the best kind of chaos."
And as the sunflowers soaked in their water behind you, you knew he wouldn't have it any other way.
