The night had settled over the Outer Banks, the soft sound of the waves crashing against the shore filling the silence of the evening. You stood on the balcony of Tannyhill, the warm breeze brushing against your skin as you gazed out at the horizon. It had been a difficult few days. Rafe had been distant, and no matter how many times you reached out to him, he seemed lost in the mess of his own mind. It was clear that something was weighing him down.
You'd given him space, knowing he needed it, but tonight, you couldn't ignore the pull to be close to him any longer. You missed him—missed the real him. The one who laughed with you, the one who made everything feel okay, even when everything was falling apart.
The sliding door behind you creaked open, and you felt the shift in the air before you heard his voice.
"There you are," Rafe murmured, his voice heavy with emotion, yet quiet, as if he wasn't sure how to approach you.
You turned to face him, noticing the way he stood there, leaning slightly against the doorframe, his eyes avoiding yours for a moment. He was always so good at hiding behind his bravado, but you could tell something was off.
You didn't need to ask him what was wrong; you already knew. "You've been shutting me out," you said softly, your voice gentle, almost as if you were treading carefully around his emotions.
Rafe's gaze flickered up to meet yours, his eyes full of frustration and uncertainty. He stepped toward you, the weight of the world on his shoulders. "I don't want to drag you into my shit, okay?" he said, his words laced with bitterness. "I know I've been distant. I've just been dealing with everything, and I don't know how to... I don't know how to be with you when I feel like I'm falling apart."
You crossed the space between you, your hand reaching for his. "Rafe, you don't have to be perfect. I don't need you to have everything figured out. I just need you to be real with me."
He stared down at your hand for a moment, almost as if he were debating whether to take it or not. After a long pause, he finally placed his hand in yours, his grip tight and uncertain. "I don't know how to let you in when I can't even figure out what's going on with me," he confessed, his voice quiet, vulnerable.
"You don't have to figure everything out on your own," you said, stepping closer. "That's what I'm here for, Rafe. I want all of you—good, bad, and everything in between. You don't have to hide the worst parts of you from me. I'll still be here. I'll still want you."
Rafe looked at you, searching your face for any sign that you were lying, but all he saw was sincerity. "You say that, but what if I'm too much for you?" he asked, his voice thick with doubt. "What if I push you away like I've done with everyone else?"
"You won't push me away," you assured him, your voice steady, despite the way your heart was racing. "I'm not going anywhere, Rafe. I want you, even when you're at your worst. I'd want you anyway."
His eyes softened, and for the first time in days, the tension in his body seemed to ease just a little. "But I'm not easy to be with," he whispered, almost as if he were afraid to admit it out loud.
"I know," you said, your thumb brushing over his hand. "I know that. But I don't need easy. I need you. All of you. Even when you're struggling, even when you're pushing me away. Don't walk away from me, Rafe. Don't shut me out."
He was quiet for a long moment, his gaze never leaving yours as if he was trying to understand how you could still want him despite all his flaws. And then, as if the words were just too much for him to hold in, he pulled you into his arms, burying his face in your hair.
"I don't know what I'd do without you," he muttered into your neck, his voice breaking slightly. "I don't deserve someone like you."
You pulled back just enough to look at him, your hands resting gently on his chest. "You deserve love, Rafe. You deserve someone who's going to fight for you, even when you're at your worst. And that's me. I'm here, no matter what."
His gaze softened, his hand reaching up to cup your face. "You make it sound so easy, like I don't have to fix everything to be enough for you."
"You don't have to fix everything. You just have to be honest with me. Let me in," you said, your voice steady but filled with so much love it made his chest ache. "You don't have to be perfect, Rafe. I'll take the worst of you, because I'll still want you anyway."
Rafe's eyes glistened with something you couldn't quite place—vulnerability, maybe, or relief. Slowly, he leaned down, pressing his lips to yours in a kiss that was soft at first, tentative, as if he was testing whether you really meant it.
When he pulled back, he looked at you, a mix of admiration and gratitude in his eyes. "You're too good for me," he whispered, almost in disbelief.
"I'm not too good for you," you said, smiling softly. "You're the one who's worth fighting for. And I'm not going anywhere."
Rafe's hand slipped into yours as he leaned against the balcony railing, pulling you close. The world felt a little quieter now, the weight of his struggles seeming lighter when you were by his side.
"You make everything feel like it's possible," he admitted, his voice full of wonder. "With you, I feel like I could be more than just the mess I keep telling myself I am."
"You don't have to be more, Rafe," you said, your voice steady. "You just have to be you. And I'll be right here, loving you through all of it."
He turned to look at you, a genuine smile finally breaking through his guarded exterior. "I'm glad you're my favourite girl," he said softly, the words heavy with meaning.
You smiled, resting your head against his shoulder, feeling a sense of peace settle over you both. "And I'm glad I'm yours."
For the first time in days, it felt like you were exactly where you needed to be—together, no matter how messy life got. You knew it wasn't always going to be easy, but with Rafe, you were willing to face whatever came your way. Because you didn't need him to be perfect. You just needed him.
