Rafe had been looking forward to this road trip for weeks—just the two of you, the open road, and a playlist of your favorite songs. But, barely an hour into the drive, you were already up to your usual antics, and he could tell this trip would be anything but ordinary.
As he drove, you kept flipping through the radio stations, unable to settle on one song for longer than thirty seconds. He glanced over, grinning as you sang a few lyrics of each song dramatically, only to switch it up again.
"Can we listen to a whole song?" he asked, laughing.
You shrugged, flashing him an innocent smile. "Where's the fun in that?"
After another round of flipping channels, you gasped, spotting a gas station up ahead. "Pull over! I need snacks!"
"We just left ten minutes ago," he chuckled, but he obliged, pulling into the station.
You hopped out and ran toward the store, disappearing inside. Rafe followed at a more relaxed pace, only to find you standing in the candy aisle, looking absolutely overwhelmed by the options.
"Which one should I get?" you asked, holding up two bags of gummy bears and chocolate bars.
"Uh... both?" he said, already knowing that was what you'd choose anyway.
With an excited smile, you grabbed both bags along with a few other treats and handed them to him to carry. As you both headed back to the car, you started munching on your gummy bears, popping one in his mouth with a grin before you both buckled up.
Back on the road, you leaned over and playfully tapped his shoulder every few minutes, pointing out every funny billboard, weirdly shaped cloud, and cow you saw along the way.
"Look! That cloud looks like a dog!" you said, eyes wide with excitement.
He glanced up, smirking. "That's a stretch, but if you say so."
A while later, you took over control of the playlist, finding the loudest, most upbeat song you could. "Dance with me!" you exclaimed, starting to bop in your seat.
Rafe rolled his eyes, laughing. "I'm driving."
You leaned over, giving him your best puppy-dog eyes. "Oh, come on, Mr. Serious. You can at least sing along."
With a sigh, he eventually gave in, singing the chorus with you as you both laughed. You took out your phone, holding it up to take a quick video of the two of you. Rafe tried to hide, but you managed to catch him singing a line with a grin before he tried to snatch the phone away.
When you finally reached your destination—a cozy cabin surrounded by trees—you bounded out of the car, stretching and immediately running toward the lake nearby.
"Slow down, will you?" he called after you, laughing as he grabbed the bags from the car.
Turning back to him, you flashed a wide grin. "Never! Life's too short."
As the sun started setting, you both sat on the dock, your legs dangling over the edge as you watched the water ripple under the orange and pink sky. Rafe reached over, slipping his hand into yours, his thumb brushing your knuckles in gentle circles.
He glanced over, smiling softly. "You know, you drive me a little crazy sometimes."
You looked up at him, grinning. "And yet, here you are."
He laughed, pulling you closer. "Yeah... here I am. And I wouldn't have it any other way."
You leaned against his shoulder, letting the peaceful sounds of the lake settle around you both. For once, you were quiet—though Rafe had a feeling it wouldn't last long.
And he wouldn't have it any other way.
