It was one of those nights where the world outside seemed so quiet that you could almost hear your thoughts echoing in your mind. The moonlight slipped through the window, casting a soft glow on the room, and yet sleep felt miles away. You were curled up in Rafe's arms, his chest rising and falling with every steady breath, his warmth making you feel safe. But no matter how much you tried to close your eyes, the weight of exhaustion kept pressing down on you, and sleep still eluded you.
You shifted beneath the covers, tugging the blanket closer around your shoulders, but it wasn't enough. It felt like you couldn't get comfortable, no matter how hard you tried. You rolled over onto your back, staring at the ceiling, your thoughts racing.
You sighed quietly, hoping Rafe wouldn't wake up. But as soon as the sound left your lips, you felt his arm tighten around you, his protective instinct kicking in even in his sleep.
"Everything okay?" he mumbled, his voice groggy but filled with concern.
You bit your lip, not wanting to disturb him, but you couldn't help it. "Rafe, I can't sleep."
His head shifted, lifting slightly, and he blinked sleepily at you, his eyes heavy but filled with warmth. "What do you mean, love?" His voice was thick with sleep, but there was still that familiar tenderness. "You're too tired to sleep?"
You nodded, feeling a little childish, the exhaustion weighing down on you. "I'm really tired," you muttered, "but every time I try to sleep, I just... can't."
Rafe blinked a few more times, trying to shake off the last remnants of sleep. He shifted on the bed, pulling you closer so your head was resting on his chest, his arm draped lazily around your waist. His fingers gently traced small circles on your back, and for a moment, you almost felt like your body might finally relax into sleep. But then you turned your head, your cheek pressing against his chest, and the restlessness bubbled up again.
"I'm so tired, Rafe," you whispered again, your voice now full of that childish, needy tone that you knew only he could handle. "I just... can't sleep."
Rafe chuckled softly, the sound warm and comforting. "I know, baby. You've been tossing around for hours. You're driving me crazy."
You poked his chest playfully, a grin tugging at the corner of your lips despite your frustration. "I can't help it!" you protested. "I'm so tired, and my brain won't turn off!"
"Yeah, well, you've always been a little dramatic," he teased lightly, his voice still sleepy but affectionate.
You groaned, rolling your eyes even though you knew he couldn't see it. "I'm not being dramatic. I'm just... frustrated. I can't sleep."
Rafe's smile softened as he gently cupped your face, lifting it so you had no choice but to meet his eyes. "Okay, love. Let's figure this out." His thumb brushed over your cheek, his gaze tender. "You know I'm here, right?"
You nodded, but even though his words reassured you, the exhaustion and the restlessness still gnawed at you. "I know. I just... I want to sleep, but my mind won't shut up."
Rafe's fingers moved to your hair, gently brushing through the strands, and his touch was soothing, like a quiet melody that calmed you despite the storm of thoughts in your head. "Let me help you," he whispered. "How about I tell you a story?"
You frowned slightly, your thoughts slowing but still bouncing around. "A story?" you echoed, your voice still full of fatigue.
"Yeah," he said, a smile in his voice. "You love my stories. And I bet it'll help you relax."
You sighed, but there was a flicker of curiosity. You always loved Rafe's stories, no matter how silly they were. "Okay," you mumbled, though your voice was laced with exhaustion.
Rafe chuckled softly, clearly amused by your half-hearted agreement. He tucked you closer, his lips brushing against your forehead as he began, "Once upon a time, there was a very sleepy princess who just couldn't seem to fall asleep no matter how tired she was. She tossed and turned in her bed, her mind racing with a million thoughts. She kept staring at the ceiling, wondering when she would finally drift off into dreamland."
You closed your eyes, focusing on the sound of his voice as he continued the story. You could feel his chest rise and fall beneath you, the gentle rhythm of it almost lulling you into a peaceful daze. "This princess," he went on, "was frustrated because no matter how much she wanted to sleep, she just couldn't. But she knew there was someone who would always help her, someone who loved her no matter how crazy she was acting."
You let out a soft sigh, feeling your body begin to relax. Rafe's fingers never stopped moving through your hair, each stroke gentle and comforting. "And one night," he continued, "the princess called out to her knight, her protector. And the knight, though exhausted himself, came to her side. He wrapped her up in his arms and told her that no matter how restless she was, he would be there for her. He told her that he loved her, and that she didn't need to be afraid of not sleeping, because he would stay right beside her, no matter what."
You smiled faintly at his words, your eyelids fluttering as sleepiness began to take over, but you didn't want him to stop. "What happened to the princess?" you asked softly, barely able to keep your eyes open.
Rafe's voice softened even more, barely above a whisper. "The princess, with the knight holding her close, realized that she wasn't alone. She closed her eyes, feeling safe, knowing she was loved. And finally, she fell asleep, knowing that no matter how hard it was to sleep, she had everything she needed to rest."
You yawned softly, the tension in your body melting away with each of his words. "I like that story," you whispered, your voice thick with sleep now.
Rafe pressed a gentle kiss to the top of your head. "I'm glad you do, love," he murmured, his tone low and soothing. "Now, get some sleep. I'm right here."
You nodded slowly, your body finally relaxing into the bed as the exhaustion from the day caught up to you. Rafe's presence, his warmth, his voice—it all wrapped around you like a soft blanket, pushing away the restless thoughts that had kept you awake for so long.
As your breathing slowed, Rafe's hand continued to trace lazy circles on your back, a comforting rhythm that helped ease you into a deep, peaceful sleep. The world felt far away, and for the first time that night, you felt truly at ease, with Rafe right beside you, holding you through it all.
And with that, you drifted off into sleep, knowing you were loved and safe, ready to rest in his arms until morning.
