It had been one of those hot summer days that made you lazy, where the sun hung low in the sky, casting a golden glow over the Outer Banks. You were lying on the dock, your legs dipped into the water, cool waves lapping against your skin. The salty breeze was calming, and you closed your eyes, enjoying the quiet. That was until a familiar voice broke the silence.
"You look like you could use some company," Rafe Cameron teased, his voice carrying that usual smirk.
You opened one eye to look at him. "Is that your way of inviting yourself?"
He grinned, that crooked smile that always made your heart skip a beat. "Maybe."
Before you could respond, Rafe sat down next to you, his shoulder brushing against yours. For a few moments, neither of you spoke. It was like that with him sometimes—comfortable, easy silence. But there was always an underlying electricity, a tension that you felt with every glance and every accidental touch.
"You've been quiet today," Rafe finally said, his tone softening as he dipped his toes into the water beside you.
You sighed, leaning back on your hands and staring up at the sky. "Just thinking."
He gave you a sideways glance, his blue eyes flickering with curiosity. "About what?"
You bit your lip, not sure how to phrase it. Rafe wasn't exactly the guy people thought of when it came to deep conversations, but you knew better. You'd seen sides of him that no one else had—his protective side, his vulnerability, the way he looked at you when he thought you weren't watching.
"Us," you finally said, voice barely above a whisper.
Rafe's hand stilled in the water, and for a second, you thought maybe you'd said too much. But then he turned toward you, his expression unreadable. "Yeah?"
You nodded, suddenly nervous under his gaze. "I just... I wonder if this—if we—are real. Or if it's just—"
"Don't," he interrupted softly, his hand reaching out to gently touch your knee. "Don't do that. Don't doubt it."
You looked down at where his hand rested on your skin, the warmth of his touch grounding you. "Sometimes it just feels too good to be true," you admitted, your voice small.
Rafe shifted closer, his fingers trailing up to cup your cheek. "I know I don't always say the right thing, and I've done a lot of things wrong, but... this? Us?" His thumb brushed against your cheekbone, and you couldn't help but lean into his touch. "This is the one thing that feels right."
Your breath caught in your throat as you looked into his eyes. There was sincerity there, a rawness that you weren't used to seeing in him. Rafe wasn't one to open up easily, but with you, it was different.
"Rafe..." you started, but he leaned in, his lips brushing against yours in a kiss that was soft, gentle—completely opposite of the tough image he always put up.
When he pulled back, he rested his forehead against yours. "You're everything to me, you know that, right?" he whispered, his breath warm against your lips.
You smiled, your heart swelling. "You're everything to me too."
For a moment, it was just the two of you, wrapped up in each other, the world outside fading away. And in that stolen moment, you knew without a doubt that whatever this was—it was real.
