Rafe Cameron was a force to be reckoned with, but even the fiercest storm needed a safe harbor. After the explosive fight with his father, he felt like he was walking through a fog. He had stormed out of the house, his emotions still boiling over from the confrontation. He didn't care about the consequences anymore; all he wanted was to escape.
Topper, ever the peacemaker, tried to calm Rafe down as he paced in the backyard, his fists clenched at his sides. "Hey, man, just breathe. You can't let him get to you like this," he said, placing a hand on Rafe's shoulder.
Rafe shrugged it off, his jaw tense. "You don't understand, Top. He doesn't see me. He never has. I'm sick of being his punching bag."
Topper sighed, knowing he wasn't getting through. He had seen Rafe at his worst and knew that this was a particularly dark moment. He decided to call you instead, hoping you could reach him in a way that he couldn't.
When you received the call from Topper, your heart raced. "Rafe's in a bad place," he said urgently. "Can you come over? He needs you."
Without hesitation, you agreed. The drive felt like an eternity as you replayed the various scenarios in your head, wondering how Rafe was holding up.
When you arrived, you found Rafe still pacing, his breath coming in quick bursts. "Rafe," you called softly, stepping closer. He turned at the sound of your voice, his eyes wild with emotion.
In an instant, you were in his arms, feeling the tension radiating off him. "I'm so sorry," he muttered, burying his face in your hair. "I just... I don't know what to do anymore."
You pulled back slightly to look into his eyes. "You don't have to figure it all out right now. I'm here for you, no matter what."
Rafe nodded, his expression softening. "I just felt so powerless. I tried to stand up for myself, but all it did was make things worse."
You squeezed his hands, grounding him. "You're not powerless, Rafe. You're strong, and you're not alone. I'm right here."
He took a deep breath, finally allowing the tension to ebb away just a little. "I don't want to feel this way. I don't want to push you away."
"You're not pushing me away," you assured him, brushing your thumb across his knuckles. "You're human. It's okay to feel angry, to feel hurt. Just let me help you through it."
After a moment, Rafe finally let out a shaky breath. "I just can't shake off how he made me feel," he confessed. "Like I'm not good enough."
You shook your head. "You're more than good enough. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Especially not him."
Rafe's expression softened, and you could see the gratitude in his eyes. "Thanks for coming. I don't know what I'd do without you."
You smiled, relief washing over you. "You'll never have to find out. I'm not going anywhere."
In that moment, surrounded by the chaos of the world outside, you both found a moment of peace, knowing that as long as you had each other, you could face anything together.
