The sun was shining down on the beach, casting a golden glow over the rolling waves. You were practically vibrating with excitement—this was the perfect day. A beach day with Rafe, Sarah, and Topper, the kind of day where the worries of the world could be left behind, even just for a few hours.
You stretched out your arms, letting the salty breeze whip through your hair, a wide grin on your face. You had big plans for today: swim, surf, maybe even try some stunts on the board. You'd never admit it, but you wanted to impress Rafe.
"Race you to the water!" you challenged, hopping up and dashing toward the shore without waiting for an answer.
Rafe, Sarah, and Topper followed, laughing as you all ran along the sand. You glanced back to see Rafe's smug grin, his competitive nature clearly ignited. Of course, you knew he'd catch up, but you weren't going down without a fight.
By the time you reached the water, your feet were already sinking into the cool sand. You dove into the waves with a yelp of joy, surfboard in tow, and paddled out. Rafe was right behind you, his powerful strokes cutting through the water effortlessly.
"You're not gonna beat me this time!" you yelled over your shoulder.
"Is that so?" he called back, a teasing edge to his voice. "We'll see about that, sweetheart."
As you paddled further out, you spotted a couple of other surfers doing tricks—flips, spins, the works. Your eyes lit up.
"I bet I could do that," you muttered to yourself, sizing up the waves.
Rafe caught the look on your face. "You're not gonna try something crazy, are you?"
You shot him a playful smirk. "Maybe."
He rolled his eyes but said nothing, knowing there was no stopping you once you set your mind on something. You paddled harder, determined to catch a big wave.
With a burst of energy, you caught the wave, riding it smoothly at first—until you saw the opportunity to do something flashy. You pushed yourself up into a standing position, balancing yourself on the board, and attempted a flip.
You got halfway through before disaster struck. The board slipped out from under you, and the next thing you knew, you were tumbling through the water, your body twisting awkwardly. You barely managed to get your bearings before the force of the wave knocked you into a spin, and you felt a sharp pain shoot through your side.
The water around you turned a little murky, and panic crept into your chest as you struggled to stay afloat.
"Hey! You okay?" Rafe's voice rang out in the distance, his concern clear. You heard him paddling toward you, but you couldn't respond immediately. The pain in your side had taken the breath out of you.
He reached you in seconds, his strong hands gripping your arms as he steadied you. "What happened?" he demanded, his voice unusually tight.
"I—I think I twisted something," you gasped, trying to steady yourself.
"Shit." Rafe's jaw clenched, and you saw him glance back at Sarah and Topper, who had quickly paddled over as well.
"Let's get her to the shore," Sarah suggested, her voice calm but with a worried edge.
Rafe didn't waste a second. He helped you climb onto his board, keeping one arm around you to hold you steady. Every inch of him radiated tension as he paddled with purpose, his movements sharp and focused.
As you neared the shore, you felt a little embarrassed, but mostly you were grateful for the care Rafe was showing. When you finally reached the sand, he helped you off the board and made sure you were sitting comfortably.
Topper, who had been quiet until now, frowned. "You should've told us you were gonna try something that crazy."
"I didn't think it'd go that badly," you muttered, wincing as you tried to shift your weight.
Rafe dropped to his knees beside you, his hand going straight to your side. "Don't move too much," he said, his voice low and steady. "I'll get you to the doctor if we need to."
You raised an eyebrow, still feeling a little embarrassed. "You're gonna baby me now?"
"Hell yeah, I am." He smirked, clearly trying to mask the worry in his eyes. "You're lucky I didn't have to swim after you for miles."
"I didn't need saving," you said, rolling your eyes but still leaning into him. "I was fine."
Sarah chuckled from behind you. "She's always fine... until she's not."
You rolled your eyes again but gave in to the gentle support Rafe was offering. "I'm sorry, I just wanted to impress you."
Rafe's hand brushed through your hair, his expression softening. "You impress me just by being you. You don't have to do flips to prove anything."
You gave him a teasing smile. "Good, because my flips are terrible."
"That's the understatement of the year." Rafe chuckled, and for a moment, everything felt light again.
He didn't say anything more, but the way he stayed close to you, watching out for your every move, spoke volumes.
And for all your reckless behavior, that was enough.
