It was a perfect evening on the Outer Banks, the kind of night where the ocean breeze was warm and the boardwalk was alive with the sounds of laughter and carnival games. You and Rafe had decided to hit the boardwalk on a whim, and, as usual, he was already up to something.
"You know I'm unbeatable at ring toss, right?" Rafe declared as the two of you walked past one of the many game booths.
You raised an eyebrow, smirking. "Oh, really? Unbeatable? That's funny, considering you lost to me the last time we played."
"That was a fluke," he shot back, nudging your shoulder. "Tonight, I'm reclaiming my title as champion."
"Alright, big shot," you teased. "Prove it."
Rafe wasted no time stepping up to the ring toss booth, handing the attendant a crumpled bill. You stood back, arms crossed, watching as he picked up the first ring and lined up his shot.
"Don't choke," you said, grinning.
He threw the first ring—and missed.
"Wow, impressive start," you teased.
Rafe shot you a mock glare before grabbing another ring. "This is just a warm-up. Watch and learn."
By the time he'd thrown all the rings, he'd only managed to land one on a bottle. You couldn't stop laughing as the attendant handed him a tiny, sad-looking keychain as a consolation prize.
"Unbeatable, huh?" you said, trying to catch your breath.
"Alright, your turn, Miss Expert," he said, stepping aside.
You handed over your money and picked up a ring, feeling Rafe's eyes on you as you lined up your shot. With one smooth toss, you landed the ring perfectly on the bottle.
Rafe's jaw dropped. "Are you kidding me?"
You tossed another ring—and hit your mark again.
"No way," Rafe muttered, running a hand through his hair.
By the end of your turn, you'd racked up enough points to win a giant stuffed bear. The booth attendant handed it to you with a smile, and you turned to Rafe, holding the bear up triumphantly.
"So, what were you saying about being unbeatable?"
He laughed, shaking his head. "Okay, fine, you're better at ring toss. But I'll win at something else tonight. Just you wait."
The two of you wandered further down the boardwalk, stopping for cotton candy and funnel cakes. Rafe couldn't resist stealing bites of your food, grinning mischievously every time you swatted his hand away.
"Rafe, get your own!" you said, trying to shield your funnel cake from him.
"But yours tastes better," he argued, taking another bite before you could stop him.
"Unbelievable," you muttered, though you couldn't help but smile.
Eventually, you found yourselves at the photo booth, and Rafe insisted you had to take pictures.
"Come on," he said, dragging you inside. "We need proof of how much fun you're having with me."
The two of you squeezed into the tiny booth, and Rafe hit the button to start the countdown.
For the first picture, he wrapped an arm around you, both of you smiling sweetly at the camera.
For the second, he leaned over and kissed your cheek, catching you by surprise.
By the third, you were laughing so hard you couldn't keep a straight face.
And for the final shot, Rafe turned to you, cupping your face in his hands and pressing a kiss to your lips just as the flash went off.
When the pictures printed, you both stood there, laughing at how ridiculous some of them were. Rafe pulled out his wallet and carefully tucked the strip of photos inside.
"Gotta keep this as a souvenir," he said, grinning.
"Why? So you can remember the time I destroyed you at ring toss?"
"Ha, ha," he said, rolling his eyes. "No, so I can remember how cute my girlfriend looks when she's having the time of her life."
You felt your cheeks heat up at his words, but you quickly masked it with a playful shove. "You're such a sap."
"Only for you," he replied, draping an arm around your shoulders as the two of you continued down the boardwalk.
The night ended with a ride on the Ferris wheel, the two of you sitting at the very top as the lights of the boardwalk twinkled below. Rafe had his arm around you, and you rested your head on his shoulder, feeling completely at peace.
"You know," he said softly, his voice cutting through the quiet night, "I don't think I'd ever have this much fun with anyone else."
You looked up at him, smiling. "That's because no one else would put up with your nonsense."
He laughed, leaning down to kiss your forehead. "Fair enough."
As the Ferris wheel started moving again, you closed your eyes and savored the moment. Because with Rafe, every night felt like an adventure—and you wouldn't trade it for anything.
