the hum of the heater buzzed softly in the background of the cozy living room, weaving itself into the low volume of a movie playing on the television.
minho was sprawled comfortably on the couch, one arm draped over the backrest, his other hand rhythmically petting soonie who lay curled up in a ball on his lap. the orange tabby purred contentedly, eyelids drooping in lazy bliss.
the room was warm, bathed in soft yellow light from the lamp in the corner, and smelled faintly of lavender from the candle jisung had lit earlier.
minho's attention was only half on the screen, his eyes occasionally flicking to the dialogue subtitles, not really invested in the plot. his heart, he'd always say, was rarely in fiction anymore - he'd already found his favorite story in real life.
suddenly, the sound of rustling and footsteps pulled him from his thoughts. jisung's voice came from the hallway, tinged with excitement and nostalgia.
"minho! babe, look what I found!"
minho turned his head just as jisung appeared in the doorway, grinning, holding a dusty old video camera in his hands. the black plastic was scuffed, but intact, the screen folded shut like a sleeping memory.
minho raised a brow. "is that your old one? the one you used to vlog with like a dramatic film major?"
"hey!" jisung laughed as he bounded over, sliding onto the couch beside him. "it's a vintage relic, thank you very much. and no, it's not just any camera - it's the camera. the one I used in uni."
minho furrowed his brows, intrigued. "from your dorm days?"
jisung nodded eagerly, already fumbling with the cables to hook it up to the tv. "you remember how I used to record everything, right? even when I didn't upload half of it. I found the sd card in an old box of wires I kept for no reason. and min, I–" his voice caught in his throat for a second, eyes softening. "I know what's on it."
minho watched him, a flicker of curiosity blooming into something more tender. he knew jisung got sentimental, especially when it came to their early years, but there was something reverent in the way he looked at the camera. almost like it held ghosts.
with a few beeps and a flicker, the tv screen lit up with the grainy timestamp of a video file.
"video 001 - september 23rd, 2015"
the screen faded from black to a dimly lit dorm room. a young jisung came into focus, positioned in front of the camera with the awkward precision of someone who had done this far too often. his hair was a little longer, his skin rounder, baby cheeks still full, and eyes bright with youth. he looked nineteen - because he was.
he smiled at the lens, a soft, almost bashful thing, before sighing and resting his chin in his hand.
"okay, okay–don't laugh at me," he said, pointing at the camera with mock severity. "this is for my future self or... whatever. I just need to say this out loud because it's driving me crazy."
he shifted on the bed, folding his legs underneath him.
"I think– I know–I'm in love. like, not the puppy crush thing. not like 'oh he's cute' - though he is, so unfairly cute I wanna scream." he paused to groan and collapse backward onto his pillow dramatically. "it's bad, you guys. it's so bad."
